The graded stakes action Sept. 14 in Canada is not limited to Woodbine, which stages six graded races, four of them grade 1s.
Elsewhere in Western Canada, Hastings Racecourse hosts the CA$125,000 British Columbia Derby (G3), a 1 1/8-mile dirt race led by the 1-2 finishers from the Canadian Derby (G3) at Century Mile Aug. 24.
Peter Redekop's homebred August Rain , a chestnut 3-year-old by Sungold , rallied to win that fast-paced race over J Dutton . August Rain, trained by Barbara Heads, is likely to be favored on Saturday under Amadeo Perez, as the gelding was when competing in the Canadian Derby. August Rain is a six-time winner from 10 starts.
J Dutton is a California-bred son of Smiling Tiger owned by Gordon Christoff and Lance Giesbrecht. Trained by Robert Anderson, the gelding will be making his third stakes start in the British Columbia Derby.
The British Columbia Derby is one of four stakes at Hastings on Saturday along with the Jack Diamond Futurity, Sadie Diamond Futurity, and British Columbia Oaks.
