The $1 million California Crown (G1) at Santa Anita Park Sept. 28 caused movement in week 36 of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Top Thoroughbred Poll as winner Subsanador joined the Top 10 in fourth place.
Expertly ridden by Mike Smith for trainer Richard Mandella, the Argentinean-bred son of Fortify outran National Treasure and Newgate in a stretch-long duel to win by a head.
National Treasure, fourth in last week's rankings, fell into a tie for fifth with Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Highland Falls . Newgate appeared in 18th.
Previously a winner in the Aug. 17 Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park, Subsanador is 2-1-0 from four starts this season with earnings of $842,000. Wathnan Racing owns Subsanador after acquiring him earlier this year in a private sale.
Other changes to the top 10 came in a first-place swap back to Travers (G1) winner Fierceness , who lost the lead for a week following Thorpedo Anna 's Cotillion (G1) victory at Parx Racing Sept. 21. Star turf sprinter Cogburn rose from fifth to third in the rankings while Adare Manor , who was retired during the week, dropped from third to 10th.
Other big winners from the weekend appeared just outside the Top 10, with Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1T) winner Far Bridge in 12th, City Of Hope Mile (G2T) winner Johannes in 13th, and Woodward Stakes (G2) winner Tapit Trice in 17th.
The leaderboard could see more changes this week with numerous Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races across the country.
Subsanador also debuted in the Oct. 1 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) rankings, ranking fifth. The 5-year-old is the highest-ranked older horse. Fierceness remains the leader, followed by international hopefuls City of Troy and Forever Young . Sierra Leone is fourth.
Seize the Grey and Tapit Trice also joined the top 10 in ninth and tenth, respectively, following the retirement of Dornoch and fifth-place finish of Derma Sotogake in the Sept. 25 Nippon TV Hai.
