Tough Gotham a Key Derby Prep Race (también en Español)

The 62nd running of the Grade 3, Gotham Stakes got a nice boost in prize money to $500,000 this year, with $300,000 and a very important 50 points awarded in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points system going to the winner. Ten betting interests including a coupled entry make up this year's Gotham field, led by the winner and runner-up from last month's Grade 3 Withers Stakes, Samraat and Uncle Sigh, respectively. The contention is quite deep in this year's race with recent stakes winners Extrasexyhippzster (Miracle Wood Stakes) and In Trouble (Grade 2 Futurity Stakes) also entering the race in top form, although noting In Trouble makes his first start in five months and may need a race before running his best. Beaten a nose last month when second in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes, Harpoon is yet another rising star in the three-year-old ranks to note. Noble Cornerstone is coupled with Samraat for wagering purposes as they share the same owner and before a seventh place effort in the Sam F. Davis, Noble Cornerstone missed by a neck in the Springboard Mile Stakes so has a chance to be competitive in this situation. Financial Mogul is another who ran poorly in his most recent race (sixth in the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes) but he finished second prior to that in the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes last fall and could be a factor. Deceived was very impressive winning against lesser rivals by eight lengths over the track last month, while Classic Giacnroll finished fourth in the Withers but prior to that finished second in the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes. Mister Lightning won over the track in December but has finished seventh and fourth, respectively, in his two stakes tries since then. Monopolize rounds out the field, the third of three starters from the barn of North American leading trainer Todd Pletcher, but the least accomplished, with only a maiden win to his credit.
Noble Cornerstone and Samraat make up a very tough one-two punch in this year's Gotham Stakes, with Samraat a horse that likes to run first or second from the start and with Noble Cornerstone likely to be far back in the early stages and coming on strongly in the stretch. They are coupled in the wagering because they share the same ownership so if we prefer one over the other we get them both anyway when wagering. Samraat has won all four of his career starts and is certainly capable of keeping his perfect record intact. Sitting in second in the early stages behind Uncle Sigh in the Withers Stakes, Samraat went by the pacesetter with ease to earn a 95 Equibase Speed Figure, having earned a career best and field high 108 figure prior to that winning the Damon Runyon Stakes over the track. Without a doubt, repeating either effort gives Samraat every right to win the Gotham. That being said, I think Noble Cornerstone has a higher probability to win than Samraat, for the reason there are up to five horses in the field that like to run on the lead or very close to the lead in the early stages. The possibility for faster than average early fractions that will tire those horses out is high and that sets up the late kick of Noble Cornerstone nicely. Noble Cornerstone won his debut by five lengths and then missed by a neck in the Springboard Mile Stakes, earning a career best 99 Speed Figure in the process. Both of those efforts came when Noble Cornerstone was wearing blinkers and we can completely ignore his last race on February 1 as the blinkers were removed for that race in which he ran poorly. With the blinkers going back on for this race, Noble Cornerstone could be running by the field for the win.
Extrasexyhippzster has won two stakes in a row, first the Don Rickles Stakes here at Aqueduct then the Miracle Wood Stakes at his home base at Laurel. Having come from off the pace to draw off easily in the stretch in both efforts and having earned a pair of strong figures, 105 then 103, Extrasexyhippzster could be prominent once again and battle down to the wire in the Gotham.
Harpoon has never been worse than second in five races. Although he has four runner-up finishes in those five starts, the win was one before his last race and was a solid five length victory. Harpoon followed that up with an even better effort, versus much tougher foes, when missing by a nose in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, earning a career best 96. One of three horses in the field from the barn of Todd Pletcher, if Harpoon improves again as might be expected he could post the mild upset in this field.

Uncle Sigh and Deceived may be just a cut below the top contenders but must be considered for wagers we make involving this race such as the exacta and trifecta. Uncle Sigh set a slow pace on the lead in the Withers and was passed late by Samraat but still ran well considering that was only the third start of his career and his second around two-turns. He earned a 94 in the Withers but prior to that earned a 107 figure that would make him very competitive in this field if he can repeat it and if he doesn't get a lot of early pace pressure from other horses. Deceived earned a career best 99 figure over the track last on January 31, winning easily by eight lengths. Although he finished third and far back in his only stakes try, if he takes another step forward off that most recent effort he can certainly run better than his odds will suggest he can.
The rest of the field, with their best representative Equibase Speed Figures, is Classic Giacnroll (94), Financial Mogul (96), In Trouble (99), Master Lightning (90) and Monopolize (87).

Sin lugar a dudas, repetir cualquiera de esos esfuerzos, le daría a Samraat todo el derecho a ganar el Gotham. Dicho ello, creo que Noble Cornerstone tiene una mejor probabilidad de ganar que Samraat, en vista de que hay más de cinco caballos en el grupo que gustan de correr en punta o muy cerca de ella en los primeros tramos. La posibilidad de parciales iniciales más rápidos que el promedio y que agotarán a esos caballos es alta y eso hará todo más fácil para la atropellada de Noble Cornerstone. Noble Cornerstone ganó su debut por cinco cuerpos y luego perdió por pescuezo en el Springboard Mile Stakes, consiguiendo en el proceso, un 99 de velocidad, el mejor de su campaña. Ambos esfuerzos fueron cuando Noble Cornerstone estuvo usando anteojeras y podemos en consecuencia ignorar completamente su última carrera del 1ro de Febrero, cuando ellas fueron removidas, corriendo muy modestamente. Con anteojeras nuevamente para esta carrera, Noble Cornerstone pudiese estar pasando este lote por encima.

Extrasexyhippzster ha ganado dos clásicos al hilo, primero el Don Rickles Stakes aquí en Aqueduct y luego el Miracle Wood Stakes en su pista local en Laurel. Habiendo venido desde el fondo para pasar de largo fácilmente en la recta en ambos esfuerzos, y habiendo logrado un par de sólidas figuras, 105 y 103, Extrasexyhippzster pudiese estar prominente una vez más y batallar duro hasta la meta en el Gotham.

Harpoon nunca ha estado peor que segundo en cinco carreras. Aunque tiene cuatro placés en aquellas cinco salidas, el triunfo conseguido antes de su última actuación, fue una sólida victoria por cinco cuerpos. Harpoon continuó eso con un esfuerzo aún mejor, versus rivales incluso más exigentes, cuando perdió por una nariz en el Sam F. Davis Stakes, consiguiendo un 96, el mejor de su campaña. Uno de los tres caballos en el grupo pertenecientes a la caballeriza de Todd Pletcher, si Harpoon progresa nuevamente, tal como se espera, él podría ser una mediana sorpresa en este lote.

Uncle Sigh and Deceived pueden estar quizá un escalón abajo de los favoritos, pero deben ser considerados para las apuestas que suponen esta carrera, tales cono exacta y trifecta. Uncle Sigh  marcó un ritmo cómodo en la punta del Withers y fue superado luego por Samraat,  pero corrió bien, considerando que era solamente la tercera salida de su campaña y su segunda sobre dos curvas. Logró un 94 en el Withers pero antes de eso obtuvo  un 107 que podría hacerlo muy competitivo en este grupo si puede repetirlo y si no está en medio de una presión inicial muy fuerte de parte de otros rivales. Deceived consiguió un 99, la mejor figura de su campaña, sobre esta pista el 31 de Enero y ganando fácilmente por ocho cuerpos. Aunque ha llegado tercero y bastante lejos en su único intento clásico, si puede dar otro paso hacia adelante, como en su más reciente esfuerzo, el podría ciertamente correr mejor de lo que sus probabilidades sugieren que puede hacer.
