Caren Wins Shady Well in Stakes Debut

Just more than a month after Robert Marzilli's Caren became the first winner for Canadian-based freshman sire Society's Chairman, the 2-year-old filly again provided her sire a milestone in the $150,000 Shady Well Stakes July 12 at Woodbine.



Off at 9-2, the Michael De Paulo trainee tracked leader and 6-5 favorite Get Rhythm early in the 5 1/2-furlong race for Ontario-bred 2-year-old fillies, took command in the final furlong, and held off a closing drive from 29-1 longshot Crumlin Spirit to win by a head.



Get Rhythm, who tired to finish fifth in the seven-filly field, set fractions of :22.26 and :45.32 through a half-mile, while Caren pressed the pace a half-length behind. The winning filly finished the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.33 on the synthetic main track.

Caren paid $11.10, $5.70, and $4 across the board. Crumlin Spirit delivered $16.90 and $7.80. Conquest City Girl, 2 1/4 lengths back in third, brought $3.40 to show.

Shake Down Baby finished fourth, followed by Get Rhythm, This is My Night, and Miss Metropolitan, to complete the order of finish.

Caren won her debut at Woodbine June 6 in impressive fashion, taking a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight event by 2 3/4 lengths.
