Wallace W. "Wally" Hartwig, who with wife Janet ran Tower Farm in Somonauk, Ill., from 1974-2020, died Nov. 7 in Sandwich, Ill. He was 79.
They bred and raced Thoroughbreds, mainly in Illinois, but, according to friend George Cox, Tower Farm also stood a number of stallions, including Mara Lark (owned by Cox), Timely Counsel, Key Player, and Sam Ransom. The Hartwig family noted that he enjoyed keeping the property beautiful with many gardens and that he loved animals, especially pets Yankee Doodle and Nifty.
Hartwig was involved with the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Diane (Aaron) Grandgeorge and Stephanie (Scott) Hannibal, and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held in honor of Wally's life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Somonauk Athletics or the charity of one's choice. For more information or to sign the online guestbook, please visit www.EighnerFuneralHomes.com.
