Del Mar, the racetrack nestled against the Pacific Ocean in a hamlet just outside of San Diego, celebrated its opening day yesterday with heart-pounding Thoroughbred racing, a hat contest and celebrities galore. Below are some photos to take you through the entire opening day experience where the turf meets the surf.
Bing Crosby was one of the founders of the racetrack in 1937, which he envisioned as a summertime playground for Hollywood actors and racing fans alike.

Today, the track stands as a testament to Bing’s vision, maintaining its charm and architectural beauty through the 78 years of Del Mar’s existence and extensive renovations.

Before the crowds pour in on opening day, Thoroughbreds train over the dirt course and the grounds are deserted but for horsemen and women and enthusiastic fans who watch horses gallop in the early morning light.

When the gates finally open and fans arrive, hats and fashion take center stage for the first hours of opening day.

Celebrities from racing and pop culture are part of the scene; Triple Crown-winning jockey Victor Espinoza entertained reporters in the paddock while Arthur Ashe Award winner Caitlyn Jenner took in the racing action.

And at the center of all of the opening day festivities are the Thoroughbreds who brought horse racing to the Southern California summer at Del Mar.
