The 47th annual Santa Anita Park jockeys v. Holy Angels students charity basketball game on Feb. 27 turned out to be a very fast-paced event. Before tip-off, Hall of Famers Laffit Pincay Jr., Eddie Delahoussaye, Mike Smith and Gary Stevens signed autographs for all the fans in attendance at the packed gym at La Salle High School in Pasadena, Calif.
After the first few minutes of the game, the jockeys seemed like they were in a sprint rather than a route event. Let’s just say that if the referees were racing stewards, they would have been issuing suspensions left and right given the amount of traveling and dribbling violations that occurred.
Familiar names like Edwin Maldonado, Joe Talamo, Iggy Puglisi, Rafael Bejarano, Kayla Stra, Drayden Van Dyke, Orlando Mojica and Omar Figueroa suited up for the jockeys’ team.
The most valuable player for the jockeys was Drayden Van Dyke, who showed solid form and helped lead the jockeys’ team to a 27-20 gate-to-wire win over the Holy Angels squad.
All the proceeds of the game benefited the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), The Eye on Jacob Foundation, and the Holy Angels Athletic Fund.
The game was sponsored by CashCall (J. Paul Reddam) and Meticulous Talent.
It’s always a fun event and I am looking forward to next year’s renewal.
