Johannes wins the 2024 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Top turf miler Johannes , an Eclipse Award finalist for 2024 champion turf male, has been sidelined with bone bruising and will point toward a summer campaign. Camilla "Millie" Yakteen, wife of Johannes' trainer, Tim Yakteen, disclosed the news to the public via the platform X Jan. 10.

Yakteen reported that the 5-year-old son of Nyquist   had exited his victory in the Dec. 26 San Gabriel Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park with "mild bone bruising" and would be given the "necessary time off to fully recover before resuming his 2025 campaign. We look forward to seeing him run this summer."

Johannes had been nominated to the Jan. 31 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (G1T) at Gulfstream Park but has not recorded an official work since his San Gabriel win.

A homebred for Joe and Debby McCloskey, who race under the stable name Cuyathy, Johannes went 5-for-6 in 2024 with scores in the Shoemaker Mile (G1T), Eddie Read (G2T), City of Hope Mile (G2T), American (G3T), and San Gabriel stakes. In the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T), he was runner-up by three-quarters of a length to More Than Looks  . The seven-time stakes winner boasts earnings of $1,153,859.
