Field Favored as Derby Wager Pool 3 Ends

Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 closed March 1 with the mutuel field, or "All Others", the solid 3-1 favorite.
"All Others" refers to all 3-year-olds other than the 23 that were named individually in the pool, which is the third or four wagering pools for the 2014 Derby, to be run May 3.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin's decisive Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) winner Cairo Prince was the top individual at 9-1 odds. Earlier this week, a majority interest in the Pioneerof the Nile colt was sold to Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum's Darley operation by owners Terry Murray, Paul Braverman, Harvey Clarke, and Craig Robertson
Following Cairo Prince was Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (gr. II) third-place finisher Top Billing and 2013 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) winner Honor Code, both drawing firm support at 11-1 odds; Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) winner Candy Boy at 12-1; 2012 champion 2-year-old male Shared Belief at 15-1; two-time winner Bayern and multiple graded stakes winner Tapiture, both at 17-1; and Southwest Stakes (gr. III) victor Strong Mandate at 18-1.
Pool 3 closed at the start of the Gotham Stakes (gr. II) at 4:18 p.m. EST, at Aqueduct Racetrack. Gotham winner Samraat closed at odds of 30-1.
The lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager also closed March 1.
A total of $334,326 was wagered during three days of KDFW Pool 3 betting that opened Feb. 27 at noon. Win wagering totaled $239,389 and there was $94,937 in the exacta pool.
Combined betting in the first three pools of the KDFW 2014 stands at $952,654. The year's fourth and final pool is set for March 27-29.
