Seven sophomore sprinters, including multiple stakes winners W V Jetsetter and Bluegrass Singer, will face off July 25 in the $100,000 Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park going six furlongs.
Trained by George Weaver for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and R. A. Hill Stable, W V Jetsetter has done most of his damage in the Southwest, winning stakes at
Lone Star Park and
Retama Park when he was trained by Bret Calhoun for Wesley Melcher. The Texas-bred was good enough to finish third in last summer's Saratoga Special (gr. II) for his current connections. His 2015 form, however, has proved lacking, as he's been well back in two outings so far.
Crossed Sabres Stable's Bluegrass Singer won the Parx Derby in May and has raced in stakes company since, but he too finished well back after setting the pace in the Carry Back Stakes (gr. III) at
Gulfstream Park. Trained by Marcus Vitali, he will be part of the early speed in the Jersey Shore as well.
Joe Franklin, named after the legendary New York talk show host, made his Monmouth debut in May and scored a front-running victory in allowance optional claiming company. He has early lick and earlier this year finished second in the Fred Cappy Capossela Stakes.
Blame Jim will try his seventh different track in his seven starts. His stakes tries haven't yet panned out but he should be quick enough here to be in the mix.
Monmouth proved the place to be for
Forge Ahead Franki, who won a claiming event here by seven lengths two races back. He is in deeper in the Jersey Shore, however.
Hebbronville won on the front end last out in an allowance optional claimer after six straight stakes tries in which he picked up some minor pieces, notably when second in the Futurity Stakes (gr. II) at
Belmont Park last fall behind Blofeld.
Lightly raced
Jackson P has won two of his four starts and will be tested for class here.
