How to Bet the San Diego Handicap on a Budget (también en Español)

The Grade 2 San Diego Handicap takes center stage on the West coast at Del Mar this weekend. Horses 3 years old and older will go 1 1/16 miles, in the key local prep for the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes.
The San Diego field is loaded with well-known horses, such as the 2014 Breeder’s Cup Classic winner Bayern and his stablemate Hoppertunity. Bayern, the definition of a need-the-lead-type horse, has struggled to regain his 2014 form, while Hoppertunity seems to be trending up, following a runner-up finish by a nose in his most recent start in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita.
Outside of the aforementioned pair of favorites, a horse I like at an 8-1 morning-line price is Appealing Tale (#2). He stretches out a bit following a solid second in a seven-furlong, Grade 1 race at Santa Anita. He had some gas in the tank in that race a month back, and his most recent workout suggests he will move well on the new Del Mar dirt track. Additionally, he finished a close second to Hoppertunity at this distance in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes back in January. Distance should not be an issue. Peter Miller trains Appealing Tale, and I think he has a chance to continue his hot start to the meet and steal the race. Miller has won at a 20 percent clip through the first week.
Argentine-bred Catch a Flight (#6) has been steady and strong on the West Coast. Since making his way to North America, the Giant’s Causeway horse has finished no worse than third in his six starts, four of those coming in graded stakes company. I expect that streak to continue here.
Back to the probable favorites, both trained by Bob Baffert. At this point, I just can’t count or wager on a horse as streaky as Bayern (#4). Hoppertunity (#3), on the other hand, could be a player. If he matches his Gold Cup performance, he’ll win handily against this field. Even if he puts forth a lackluster effort, he can still hit the board.
It’s early, but this Del Mar meet has been wide open and I expect this race to play no different. Give me Appealing Tale at an appealing price, with the likes of Catch a Flight and Hoppertunity in the mix. In the words of my pal Jose “Los Ponies” Contreras, let’s get some taco money!

El San Diego Handicap se apropia del escenario principal de la costa oeste esta semana en Del Mar. Caballos de tres años y más edad irán a 1 1/16 de milla, en el Grado 2 que es una preparatoria local para el ilustre Pacific Classic. El grupo está cargado de caballos muy renombrados, tales como el ganador de la 2014 Breeder’s Cup Classic, Bayern y su compañero de cuadra, Hoppertunity. Bayern, la definición de un caballo necesitado siempre de la punta, ha luchado por recuperar su forma del 2014, en tanto que Hoppertunity parece estar en alza, viniendo de un segundo lugar, perdiendo a nariz, en su anterior el Gold Cup de Santa Anita.
Más allá del antes mencionado par de favoritos, el caballo que me gusta a una línea matinal de 8-1 es Appealing Tale (#2). Va a un tiro un poco más largo, luego de un sólido segundo en un evento de Grado I sobre siete furlones en Santa Anita. En esa carrera, un mes atrás, tenía más gas en el tanque y sus aprontes sugieren que se moverá muy bien sobre la nueva pista de arena de Del Mar. Adicionalmente, ha finalizado segundo muy cerca de Hoppertunity sobre esta misma distancia en el Grado 2 San Pasqual Stakes el pasado Enero. La distancia no debe ser un obstáculo. Peter Miller lo entrena y yo creo que él tiene la chance de continuar su gran comienzo de temporada y llevarse la carrera- ha ganado a un 20 por ciento de efectividad a través de la primera semana-. El experimentado Joe Talamo estará en los estribos.
El nacido en Argentina, Catch a Flight (6) ha estado parejo y consistente en la Costa Oeste. Desde que hizo su viaje a Norte América, el hijo de Giant’s Causeway ha finalizado nunca peor que tercero en seis salidas, cuatro de ellas en contra de lotes con categoría de grado. Yo creo que esa racha continuará aquí.
Volviendo a los probables favoritos, ambos entrenados por Bob Baffert. A esta altura, yo no puedo contar o apostar sobre un caballo tan irregular como Bayern (4). En cambio, Hoppertunity (3), podría ser un gran rival. Si él repite su actuación en el Gold Cup, ganará cómodamente a este grupo. Incluso si realiza un esfuerzo mediocre, podría aún estar en el marcador.
Es temprano todavía, pero esta temporada de Del Mar viene siendo muy abierta y creo que esta carrera no será diferente. Dame a Appealing Tale a un precio atractivo, con las chances de Catch a Flight y Hoppertunity en la combinación. Como dice mi amigo Jose “Los Ponies” Contreras, ¡Saquemos algo de lana para los tacos!
