Mr Nototorious Tops Del Mar Paddock Sale

Mr Notorious, a French 2-year-old winner eligible for the Breeders' Cup, topped the Barretts Paddock Sale at Del Mar, selling for $200,000. The July 25 sale was held in the Del Mar paddock immediately after the day's races.
Trainer Jim Cassidy and owner Deron Pearson, who have had good luck both in buying horses from Europe and at the Del Mar paddock sale, bought Mr Notorious in the name of Pearson's DP Racing. Con and Teresa Marnane of Ireland sold the French-bred son of Myboycharlie—Isola Tiberina, by Hennessy, through Kim McCarthy's McCarthy Bloodstock, agent.
The logistics of getting Mr Notorious from France to Del Mar led to a somewhat convoluted trip for the colt.
"He had a long trip here," Con Marnane said. "He went from Paris to Frankfurt, Germany, by road. He spent overnight in Frankfurt, flew from there to Chicago, where it took a couple of hours to refuel. Then he arrived in (Los Angeles) and did 42 hours in quarantine. He came to Del Mar and arrived last night. Kim and all of her team did a magnificent job."
Marnane discussed bringing the colt to Del Mar with Mike Donohoe of BBA Ireland and agent Niall Dalton. Lloyd said that he has received considerable interest from other Europeans to bring horses over for the sale next year.
Cassidy was pleased with Mr Notorious, noting that "he's out of quarantine and can go directly to the barn. He's a nice-looking colt."
Cassidy also purchased Moons Over Me, a stakes-placed 3-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection —Ennui, by Gone West, for $57,000 from Adrian Gonzalez's Checkmate Thoroughbreds in his own name. DP Racing also bought Storm the Castle, a 2-year-old unraced son of Stormin Fever —Grandjean, by Pentelicus, from McCarthy Bloodstock for $9,000.
Cassidy trains another European, Prize Exhibit, for Pearson. That 3-year-old filly, bred in Great Britain, won the July 19 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar and June 27 Senorita Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita.
One other horse brought six figures in the ring, but failed to sell. My Monet, who finished second in the July 18 Osunitas Stakes at Del Mar, and third in the Adoration Stakes (gr. III) and Fran's Valentine Stakes at Santa Anita, was bought back for $275,000.
Trainer Brian Koriner purchased Out ofthe Ordinary for a partnership headed by E-Racing.com and Janet Lyons for $90,000, the sale's second-highest price. Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned the 3-year-old filly for Old English Rancho and partners. Out ofthe Ordinary is an unraced California-bred daughter of Vronsky—Pinky's Posy, by Bold Badgett.
The sale, in its fourth year, offers race-ready horses, including several eligible for Del Mar's "Ship and Win" bonuses. A total of 19 sold for $728,500 and an average of $38,342. Last year, topped by Heir Kitty at $750,000, the sale grossed $2,147,000 and averaged $113,000 for 19 sold.
"It's hard to compare year to year, depending on the type of horses you have to sell," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. "We enjoyed the energy of the event, which was well-attended. We were very pleased with the results of the European colt and are looking forward to him racing later in the meet."
With the closure of Fairplex Park in Pomona as a racing facility, Barretts has moved all of its sales to Del Mar.
"We are very grateful to the Del Mar management," Lloyd said. "They allowed us to begin the paddock sale four years ago and that has led to our permanent move down here."
Barretts has also scheduled a select yearling sale for Aug. 15 at Del Mar.
