Journalism wins the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course
Journalism rebounded from a runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1) to post a resilient victory in the $2 million Preakness Stakes (G1) May 17 at Pimlico Race Course.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, the son of Curlin was stuck behind a wall of traffic turning for home, pinched between rivals at the three-sixteenths pole, and still managed to run down the free-wheeling Gosger in the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Favored at even money, Journalism returned $4. He ran the 1 3/16 miles in a final time of 1:55.47 under jockey Umberto Rispoli.
Gosger and a late-running Sandman completed the trifecta.
Journalism, earning the second grade 1 win of his career and the second Preakness win for McCarthy, is owned in partnership by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, breeder Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables 5, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith.
