Sprint Champ, Commanding Curve Spice Stakes

Description:

The 2014 champion male sprinter and a 4-year-old that finished second in last year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) are among the horses entered on an all-stakes undercard for the Aug. 1 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) program.

Midwest Thoroughbreds' Illinois homebred Work All Week, who won last year's Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) en route to an Eclipse Award, is one of eight entered in the $100,000 Senator Robert C. Byrd Memorial Stakes at six furlongs at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort. The 6-year-old City Zip   gelding has finished second in his first two starts of this year: the Aristides Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs and the Smile Sprint Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.

Regular rider Florent Geroux is named to ride Work All Week for trainer Roger Brueggemann from post 2. All starters are listed at 119 pounds.

One of the more dangerous horses in the race is owner/trainer Tommy Mills' Jasizzle, a Kentucky homebred 6-year-old gelding by Jazil. Jasizzle has five wins, five seconds, and on third in 13 starts at Mountaineer in allowance or stakes company.

West Point Thoroughbreds' Commanding Curve, second behind California Chrome in the 2014 Kentucky Derby and a winner in his first race of 2015, is one of 12 entered in what should be a strong renewal of the $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles.

Trained by Dallas Stewart, the 4-year-old Master Command ridgling won an entry-level allowance test May 30 at Churchill in his comeback race. He was put on the shelf after a ninth-place finish in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) last August after he was found to have ankle bruising, according to West Point.

Robby Albarado has the call aboard Commanding Curve from the outside post 12 at 121 pounds.

The Governor's Cup drew several horses that have competed regularly in graded stakes, including Majestic Harbor, Carve, Page McKenney, Albano, and Edge of Reality.

First post time for the special program is 2 p.m. EDT.
