Solow Extends Group I Win Streak in Sussex

Description:

Wertheimer et Frere homebred Solow won his fourth straight group I stakes and eighth consecutive race overall Wednesday, July 29 when he secured a hard-fought victory in the Qatar Sussex Stakes (Eng-I) during the "Glorious Goodwood" meeting.

Sent off at 2-5 odds in the field of eight 3-year-olds and older, Solow comfortably tracked early leader Arod throughout the one-mile race on good turf. When jockey Maxime Guyon asked for Solow's best in the final quarter-mile, he responded but so did the frontrunner who proved to have plenty in reserve. The two battled but the classy Solow emerged with a half-length victory over his determined rival.

With the win Europe's top older miler extended his group I-win streak to four straight races this year as the 5-year-old gelding also has won the Dubai Turf Sponsored by DP World (UAE-I), the Prix d'Ispahan (Fr-I), and the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) for trainer Freddy Head.

Qatar Racing Limited's Arod finished 2 1/4-lengths clear of third-place Gabrial. In U.S. pools, Solow returned $2.60 to win and $2.20 to place-show. Arod returned $3.20 and longshot Gabrial $14.80 in place-show wagering.

With the win Solow, by Singspiel (Ire)—High Maintenance, by Highest Honor, surpassed $4.75 million in career earnings. The victory was the first Sussex score for Head and Guyon.

Solow also earned a spot in this year's Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) as the Sussex is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" race.
