Why stop a good thing? With Racing and Stable Manager Justin Zayat, 23, of Zayat Stables continuing to provide America’s Best Racing with behind-the-scenes access to his Haskell Invitational Stakes week, we will continue to take each day 10 questions - or so - at a time.
Today, for the first time this week, the recent graduate of New York University was at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, visiting his family's Triple Crown winner American Pharoah three days ahead of a return to the track in Sunday's now-$1.75-million William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes.
1a. Most of us heard about the 75 percent increase to the Haskell purse on Wednesday afternoon around the time American Pharoah arrived here at Monmouth Park. When did you hear about it?
I actually went on Twitter and read about it. Obviously I'm excited about it, and it's good news. It's a credit to Monmouth and to [track bosses Dennis] Drazin and [Bob] Kulina. They want to honor the champ and make it a different Haskell than the Haskells they've had already. We're honored and thankful.
1b. Dennis Drazin said that the purse increase was going to be part of a bonus from a three-race series including two other tracks. Since that did not happen, he is offering to create a $1-million race largely on your terms between now and the Breeders' Cup to bring American Pharoah back to Monmouth Park a second time. Would your family consider it?
One-hundred percent. Monmouth has been jumping through hoops for us. We would for sure consider anything that they're going to throw at us. It's an honor. They just want the horse again. They're trying to be accommodating. They said they'll write a race to the time, the distance, whatever. They're trying their best. You've got to respect that.

1c. Considering, though, is not guaranteeing, right?
Definitely not guaranteeing. Definitely considering.
2. American Pharoah drew post position 4 in the eight horse field for Sunday's Haskell. As you were sitting at your table at lunch today for the draw, what was going through your mind?
I wasn't nervous driving down to Monmouth [from New York]. Then all of a sudden I'm coming into the [Garden] Room and oh, my God. Everyone was making me so nervous for this draw like we're talking about the Belmont right now. [laughs] I was a little on edge. I was just telling myself wait until the numbers come out. And I wasn't even concerned about the post. He's broken from the 1, he's broken from the 18. Whatever happens is going to happen. But I was nervous during the draw. When they said '4,' I said whew.
3. Who was at your table with you for the draw?
[Assistant trainer] Jimmy Barnes, [American Pharoah’s] exercise rider George Alvarez and [trainer] Kelly Breen, who's hosting Pharoah at his barn. My family is flying in from Del Mar now. [Trainer] Bob and Jill and Bode [Baffert] are still in Del Mar. Jimmy, George and I held up the fort here in the east.

4. Now that you see the whole field, with the two Mike Repole/Todd Pletcher horses - Nonna's Boy and Dontbetwithbruno - added late, what do you think of Sunday's race?
You've always got to respect Todd. Todd is a great trainer. He's got good horses coming to the race. You've got the Repole duo now entered, so it's going to be competitive. We always respect Todd Pletcher coming in, especially with Mike Smith coming in [to ride Competitive Edge]. It doesn't look as speed-heavy as it once did. There's definitely respectful speed in the race, but American Pharoah in my mind is always the speed of the speed.
5a. Take me through your day today here at the track.
I got here today at 10:45. I didn't get here for training, unfortunately. I woke up, and the first thing I did was go on Twitter and see a picture of Pharoah jogging today. I just went to #AmericanPharoah, I saw a picture. I was like - it looks good. I saw my text from Jim that said 'Super good today.' When I get those texts, it's a good sign. I ate a little breakfast and drove here to Monmouth. The first thing I did was go back to the barn to see the big horse. He was lying down getting his beauty sleep for the big day. I did not wake him up. I actually only saw him for three or four seconds. I just let him be. I've seen enough of him in the last couple weeks. Then I came over here and met with Mr. Kulina and Mr. Drazin, and we all went to the draw.
5b. Does American Pharoah snore?
Not that I know of. I've never heard him snore. He's never snored in my presence. Maybe he's trying to be polite.
6. I know you have been here to Monmouth. Are there parts of this place that make you go, oh yeah, that was a nice memory?
I've only Monmouth twice in my life. It was the [2007] Breeders' Cup when it was raining tons here; the 'monsoon' days. And then the last time I was here was when Paynter won the [2012] Haskell. I have a great time being here. I saw the track, and I had memories of when Paynter ran down the stretch here. It's getting me pumped for Sunday.
7. What superstitions do you have on race day or leading up to a race?
I try not to really change anything up. I don't wear the same tie or wear the same suit or anything like that. I'm not that superstitious. There are little things here and there. I don't like when my friends are coming up to me and telling me we're going to win. Like everyone around me tells me, "What are you worried about? Pharoah is going to win." It makes me more nervous when I hear that. But I don't have any crazy superstitions like I'm going to wear the same tie to the whole Triple Crown. One thing I will do. For some reason before every single race I roll up the program, and I always use it to whip my hand. I don't know why. It's like a thing I always do. I actually still have my programs from the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont that I rolled up.

8a. How involved are you and your family in merchandising the American Pharoah brand? And where may fans go to buy it?
I like that you asked this question, because actually later this evening we're going to be releasing our official American Pharoah website - officialamericanpharoah.com. On that website you're going to have all the apparel that you could buy. There's going to be forums on there. It's going to be a fun, interactive website. Fans could go there, and you're going to have all the information you need about American Pharoah. Right now we have a licensing contract with All Pro Championships, Fanatics and Ascot Creative. Their stuff is going to be on our website. This is going to be the main hub. It's easy to access. You'll get to see all the new, cool apparel. I am involved in that as much as I'm involved in the racing and the whole stable. I created that website along with PM Advertising. This is one of my babies - the marketing. I love the marketing side of it.
8b. And promise we didn't rehearse this question?
We didn't rehearse this.
9. We have heard that Rep. Paul Tomko, the Democrat from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has asked that President Obama maintain his tradition of welcoming sports champions to the White House by offering that honor to American Pharoah - at least his connections. Have you been involved in this? Have you heard from Washington?
The only person who reached out to me was Congressman Tomko. He personally called me and tried to make the case for us running in the Travers of course. That was the main objective for why he called. It's a huge honor to our family. He told me, 'In America when greatness is achieved in any sport, we believe that it should be honored by a White House reception with the President of the United States. So with your permission, Justin, I'm going to write a letter to the President and say that you've done something that's been unprecedented for the last 37 years. You have a great horse, and we think that you should be honored.' I told him, 'Wow. I'm elated. That would be a huge honor.' I haven't heard anything back from the White House. The first time I saw the letter was sent was when I saw it on Twitter like you guys. I thought, wow, this is so cool. Who knows? We haven't heard from President Obama yet.
10. Who have you heard from in your past who caught you off guard since American Pharoah won the Triple Crown?
My first-grade teacher sent me a letter - like 'Is that you?' A teacher at NYU who taught me as a freshman saw me on TV and said 'You own horses? Am I crazy? You were in my class, correct?' It's so funny that your teachers reach out to you. Camp counselors from years ago. 'You're running a stable with a Triple Crown winner?' They're laughing at the same time. Those are cool people who I have heard from. Old, old, old friends who I haven't spoken to in 10 years. They're like, 'Oh, my God, Justin. I'm rooting for you.' I'm like, 'I'm still in your thoughts?' It's cool to hear from people you haven't heard from in years. American Pharoah got their attention.
