Jockey Russell Back in Action at Laurel Park

Description:
Jockey Sheldon Russell returned to the saddle July 31 at Laurel Park after missing nearly three months of race riding due to injuries.

The rider was sidelined with multiple punctures in his lungs caused by broken ribs sustained in a fall April 25 at Pimlico Race Course.

Russell, who earned his 1,000th career victory earlier this year and was the leading rider at all three Maryland meets in 2011, finished third aboard Another Seven in the fourth race to launch his comeback during Laurel's Friday twilight program.

"It has been a long three months," Russell said. "I tried to come back after two months but I needed a little more time and I'm glad I waited. I've been working hard in the morning, galloping for (trainer) Tim Keefe and working as many as I can. Physically, I feel great and I look forward to finishing the meet on a good note."
