Trainer Kristin Mulhall visited the Gulfstream Park winner's circle for the first time Aug. 6, when Thunder Basin prevailed by 6 1/2 lengths in the day's third race, a the mile maiden claiming event on the dirt main track .
A recent purchase by Twilight Racing, the 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song was the first starter saddled by Mulhall since she recently established a division at Gulfstream.
"It feels great to be able to come here and win first time out. I bought this horse when we got down here and we got lucky," said Mulhall, who had been training exclusively in Southern California since taking out her trainer's license in 2002.
Thunder Basin, a first-time gelding, won as the 7-10 favorite in the $35,000 maiden claiming race and was not claimed.
"It's been pretty simple. The guys here at Gulfstream have been great. They've been more than helpful in giving us everything we need. They've just been super supportive," said Mulhall, who is scheduled to head back to Del Mar Aug. 9 for 10 days. "The horses have gotten down here, they're settling in good, and hopefully in the next couple weeks, we'll have a bunch more (winners)."
