Horses You Should Know for Arlington Million Day (también en Español)

Arlington Park’s International Festival of Racing in mid-August always attracts horses from around the United States and abroad, and this year’s races are no different. Four graded stakes races ranging in distance from 1 3/16 miles to 1 11/16 miles headline the Arlington card on Saturday, Aug. 15.
Not sure who you should know in each of these races? Read below to see who some of the International Festival’s top competitors are.
American St. Leger
Crucero comes into the American St. Leger with a win in the June 28 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at 1 3/4 miles on the Santa Anita turf. While that was his first win since breaking his maiden six starts earlier, he hadn’t gone too long between wins with his maiden victory coming in February of 2015. Crucero has made eight starts in 2015 but seems to thrive on racing, finishing on the board in five of those eight races. In fact, his San Juan Capistrano win came just seven days after finishing second in an allowance optional claiming race. The American St. Leger cuts Crucero back from 14 furlongs (1 ¾ miles) to 13.5 furlongs (1 11/16 miles)and he’ll be taking on a tougher field but if Crucero is on his game, he should be able to get a piece of the purse.
Two years ago when Ken and Sarah Ramsey won the Arlington Million with Real Solution, Ken mentioned Hyper as a horse to watch in stakes races. Fast forward to 2015 and Hyper is making his Arlington Park debut in the St. Leger. Hyper has been in over his head many times in his career and done well, even winning a few stakes races. This is the farthest Hyper has ever gone, however he won the John’s Call Stakes at 1 5/8 miles in 2013 by 1 ¾ lengths so if he is the same horse as he was before taking last year off, he should appreciate the class relief from  his last few races and do well here.
One of the foreign invaders on the card, Panama Hat is a wildcard here. Based in Ireland, Panama Hat is another one of those ultra-tough horses who shows up in the starting gate a lot. The gelding ran seven times between June 12 and August 1 last year, winning all but the first race in that series. This year, Panama Hat hasn’t had as much success but has been stepping up against tougher horses like multiple group stakes winner Forgotten Rules and Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Kingfisher. The St. Leger shouldn’t have as tough of fields as he’s run into a few times in Europe this year and he is proven at the distance, finishing second to Kingfisher at 14 furlongs (half a furlong longer than the St. Leger) so he should be challenging for the win here.
PANAMA HAT’S LAST RACE, A STAKES WIN

Secretariat Stakes
Probably the United States’ best chance to win the Secretariat, Force the Pass is coming out of an impressive win in the $1.25-million Belmont Derby. In his six starts this year, with his first being his career debut in February, Force the Pass has won four starts with no finishes worse than second. He’s riding a two-race win streak with both of those coming in graded stakes and his win in the Belmont Derby was at the same distance as the Secretariat. Richard Santulli, who is known for having really nice turf horses, is looking for his first Festival win in this race.
FORCE THE PASS

Goldstream comes into this race with an undefeated record that includes the Derby Italiano, a premiere race in Italy that he won by three easy lengths. Goldstream made his debut last September and has won his five starts by a combined 13 lengths. One question is how good the horses he’s taken on are, but with group stakes winning form and doing it as easy as he has, carrying as much as 128 pounds and no less than 121 pounds, it looks like he could be a huge threat in what looks like a tough Secretariat.
2015 DERBY ITALIANO

Highland Reel is coming into the Secretariat off of a Group 3 win and looking to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien his second consecutive win in this race. A highly regarded horse earlier this year after ending last season with a Group 2 win, Highland Reel has been a little inconsistent with two off-the-board finishes mixed in with a second in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club in late May and that aforementioned Group 3 win. He’s run 1 ½ miles in his last two starts and will be cutting back to 1 ¼ miles here, just half a furlong shorter than he went in the Prix du Jockey Club. His best wins have come at a mile or less (although his season debut was a disappointing sixth at a mile) so while this cut back isn’t that huge, the shortening up may be just what he needs to get that elusive Grade 1 win.
BEVERLY D. STAKES
Last year Euro Charline beat a tough Beverly D. field as a 3-year-old and while this field looks strong, I’m not sure it is as strong as last year. Even better for Euro Charline is that it looks like she may be coming into the race better than she did last year. Her first start after an injury suffered after the Beverly D. came in the Dubai Turf on Dubai World Cup night where she finished fourth behind the freaky good Solow and that may be able to be thrown out because it was that first start back off of an injury. Her second start back was probably more representative of Euro Charline, where she finished second by a length in the Group 1 Falmouth. If Euro Charline wins the Beverly D., she’ll be the first horse to win the race twice.
2014 BEVERLY D. STAKES

While Stephanie’s Kitten doesn’t seem to be the same horse as last year, the mare does deserve a look here. She won her first start of the year but hasn’t had the kick she’s used in the past to close and hit the board as well as normal. However she hasn’t disgraced herself, finishing just a length and 2 ¾ lengths, respectively, behind the winner her last two races. Stephanie’s Kitten was able to get within ¾ lengths of Euro Charline when finishing second in last year’s Beverly D. so she’s definitely worth looking at, if not to win then to hit the board.
Wedding Vow was the horse Coolmore settled on sending here after having three under consideration. The filly has made huge strides in the past few months, breaking her maiden in the Group 2 Kilboy Estate Stakes in July (the same race won by fellow Beverly D. entrant Mango Diva last year) before finishing second to 1,000 Guineas (a British classic) winner Legatissimo in a very good showing against a tough field. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Arlington Million and Secretariat Stakes multiple times but has never won the Beverly D. Wedding Vow will be O’Brien’s first runner in the Beverly D since Up finished sixth in 2012.

ARLINGTON MILLION
I wrote about Big Blue Kitten before this year’s United Nations and the 7-year-old went on to win the race by 1 ½ length. Two years ago, Big Blue Kitten was part of a very successful day for his sire when Kitten’s Joy colts won the Secretariat and the Arlington Million and Big Blue Kitten won the Sword Dancer at Saratoga. This is going to be Big Blue Kitten’s first run at Arlington but he’s bringing in some of the best graded stakes form of his career, not finishing worse than second in his last five starts dating back to Oct. 19, 2014. The last horse to win both the United Nations and Arlington Million was Star of Cozzene in 1992.
BIG BLUE KITTEN

The 4-year-old U.S.-bred but European-trained Bookrunner is returning to his home country for the Arlington Million.  He is very lightly raced with just one run as a 2-year-old, three runs at three and two runs so far at four but he has done well in those starts with three wins and one third in six starts. The Tiznow son will be going farther than a mile for the first time here but his sire easily covered the 1 ¼ miles of the Breeders’ Cup Classic and his dam’s sire Chester House won the Arlington Million in 2000 so that shouldn’t be a problem. A slight concern is his step up in class but he is coming in to this with two wins and a third in his last three races so he may be rounding into form here.
The Pizza Man won the American St. Leger last year and is looking to take on the Million field this year. He is coming into this race off of a two race win streak which is similar to his form last year when he came into the American St. Leger with a four race win streak (including a win in the Stars and Stripes, which he won this year as well). A fan favorite at Arlington Park, The Pizza Man will be getting a lot of support here from local fans and may give them something to celebrate after the races as he comes in here with the advantage of being familiar with this turf and winning going both shorter and longer than this race.

El Festival Internacional de Carreras de Arlington Park de mediados de Agosto atrae siempre caballos de todo Estados Unidos y del extranjero, y las carreras de este año no son diferentes. American St. Leger

El St. Leger no debería ser tan bravo como aquellos lotes donde ha estado corriendo unas cuantas veces en Europa este año y él está probado en la distancia, finalizando segundo de Kingfisher sobre 14 furlones (medio furlón más largo que el St. Leger) así que debe ser un retador por el triunfo aquí.

Secretariat Stakes
Probablemente la mejor chance que tiene Estados Unidos para ganar el Secretariat, Force the Pass está viniendo aquí luego de un impresionante triunfo en el $1.25-milón Belmont Derby. Highland Reel está llegando al Secretariat luego de un triunfo en un Grupo 3 y buscando de brindar a su entrenador Aidan O’Brien su segundo triunfo consecutivo en esta carrera. Caballo muy considerado a comienzos de este año después de culminar la temporada pasada con un triunfo de  Grupo 2, Highland Reel ha estado un tanto inconsistente con dos llegadas fuera de marcador combinadas con un segundo lugar en el Grupo 1 Prix du Jockey Club a finales de Mayo y el antes mencionado triunfo en Grupo 3. Ha corrido 1 ½ millas en sus dos últimas salidas y estará recortando a 1 ¼ millas aquí, sólo medio furlón más corto de lo que hizo en el Prix du Jockey Club. Sus mejores triunfos han sido sobre una milla o menos (aunque su debut en la temporada fue un desilusionante sexto sobre una milla) de modo que este recorte no es tan malo, y quizá bajar de distancia sea justamente lo que él necesita para conseguir ese elusivo triunfo en un Grado 1.
BEVERLY D. STAKES
El año pasado Euro Charline derrotó a un complicado lote en el Beverly D. como tres añera y aunque este lote luce fuerte, no estoy tan seguro de que sea tan exigente como el del último año. Mejor aún para Euro Charline es que parece como si ella llegara a la carrera mejor de lo que lo hizo el último año. Su primera carrera después de una lesión que sufriera después del Beverly D. vino en la Dubai Turf, la noche de la Dubai World Cup donde ella finalizó cuarta detrás de la monstruosamente buena Solow y eso podría incluso no tomarse en cuenta ya que fue su primera partida luego de una lesión. Su segunda salida luego del descanso fue probablemente más representativa de Euro Charline, donde ella terminó segunda a un cuerpo en el Grupo 1 Falmouth. Si Euro Charline ganase el Beverly D., ella sería el primer ejemplar en ganar dos veces la carrera.

Aunque Stephanie’s Kitten no parece ser la misma del último año, la yegua merece ser vista aquí. Ella ganó su primera carrera del año, pero no ha tenido la misma fuerza que tenía en el pasado para atropellar y estar en la pizarra como si fuera algo normal. No obstante no ha defraudado del todo, finalizando sólo a 1 cuerpo y a 2 ¾ de cuerpo, respectivamente, detrás del ganador en sus dos últimas. Stephanie’s Kitten fue capaz de llegar a sólo ¾ de cuerpo de Euro Charline cuando terminó segunda en el Beverly D del año pasado. Así que ella definitivamente merece una mirada, si no para ganar, al menos para estar en la pizarra.
Wedding Vow fue el ejemplar que Coolmore determinó enviar aquí después de haber tenido a tres en consideración. ARLINGTON MILLION
Yo escribí acerca de Big Blue Kitten antes del United Nations de este año y el caballo de siete años de edad vino a ganar la carrera por 1 ½ cuerpos. Dos años atrás, Big Blue Kitten fue parte de un día muy exitoso para su padrillo cuando los potros de Kitten’s Joy ganaron el Secretariat y el Arlington Million y Big Blue Kitten ganó el Sword Dancer en Saratoga. Será la primera carrera de Big Blue Kitten en Arlington pero está trayendo aquí la mejor forma clásica de toda su campaña, no finalizando peor que segundo en sus últimas cinco salidas yendo hacia atrás hasta el 19 de Octubre del 2014. El último caballo en ganar ambas carreras, el United Nations y el Arlington Million fue Star of Cozzene en 1992.
BIG BLUE KITTEN

El potro de 4-años-de edad nacido en U.S. pero entrenado en Europa, Bookrunner, está volviendo a su tierra natal para el Arlington Million. Es muy poco corrido con sólo una carrera como dos añero, tres carreras a los tres años y dos carreras hasta la fecha a los cuatro años pero lo ha hecho bien en aquellas salidas con tres triunfos y un tercero en seis salidas. El hijo de Tiznow estará yendo arriba de una milla por primera vez aquí pero su padre cubrió fácilmente la 1 ¼ de milla de la Breeders’ Cup Classic y el padre de su madre, Chester House, ganó el Arlington Million en el 2000 así que no debería ser un problema. Una ligera preocupación es el salto de categoría pero él viene de dos triunfos y un tercero en sus últimas tres carreras por lo que debería estar llegando en plenitud de forma.
The Pizza Man ganó el American St. Leger el año pasado y busca llevarse por delante el grupo del Million de este año. Llega a la carrera luego de dos triunfos al hilo, lo cual es similar a su forma del año pasado cuando llegó al American St. Leger con una racha de cuatro victorias consecutivas (incluidos un triunfo en el Stars and Stripes, el cual volvió a ganar este año también).
