Sovereignty Back on Work Tab as Travers Approaches

Two weeks removed from his fourth win of the year in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), Sovereignty  resumed breezing Aug. 9 over the Oklahoma Training Track at Saratoga Race Course as he prepares for the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 23.

The Godolphin homebred son of Into Mischief   worked solo Saturday morning under Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott's assistant, Neil Poznansky, recording four furlongs in :48.89.

"He's been pretty relaxed the last couple weeks coming out of the race," Mott. "We were looking for a nice work today, which we got. We saw a breeze that was normal for him when he goes by himself. It was fast enough and very workmanlike, probably all he needed for today."

With four weeks between races, Saturday's work was the first of two chances the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner will have to breeze ahead of the Travers. The work was on the easier side, but Mott said the colt's final breeze next week will likely be in company to have Sovereignty do "a little bit more."

"We don't need to have him do much more, but just another horse to keep him interested and finish his workout well," Mott said. "You try to balance it out. You try to do enough without doing too much. You want to keep them strong and keep them feeling good, but keep their legs under them and in good shape. So far, we've accomplished that, and he's doing very well."
