Young Central Kentucky stallion Tizway gained his first winner Aug. 16 when Tizzarunner won the first race at Woodbine by a nose.
Tizway, a 10-year-old son of Tiznow—Bethany, by Dayjur, stood in 2015 for $15,000 fee at B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm near Lexington. There are 75 2-year-olds in his first crop.
A two-time grade I winner, Tizway captured the 2011 Whitney Invitational Handicap (gr. I) and Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) as well as the 2010 Kelso Handicap (gr. II). His record of 7-1-5 from 20 career starts also includes a runner-up finish in the 2009 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (gr. I) and a third in the 2010 Met Mile. He earned more than $1.3 million racing from ages 2 through 6.
John C. Oxley's Tizzarunner was always within striking distance in the seven-furlong maiden special weight race, swung five wide late off the turn to rally, and was up in time for the narrow victory. Mark Casse trains the colt, who finished in 1:23.37 as the 4-5 favorite on the all-weather track. He was bred in Maryland by Robert Manfuso from the winning Carson City mare Piano Bar and sold to Casse via De Meric Sales for $325,000 at the 2015 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March sale of 2-year-olds in training.
