Entries Being Accepted for Great Meadow Races

Entries are being accepted for the Virginia Downs Racing, presented by the Virginia Equine Alliance, six-race card of flat Thoroughbred racing Sunday, Sept. 20 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va.

The conditions for the race day call for six races but 13 possible races are listed in the condition book. Horsemen are encouraged to include their second choices. Fillies and mares will receive a 10-pound allowance in races not restricted to fillies and mares.

Virginia bred, Virginia-sired, and Virginia-owned horses will receive preference in all open races. Virginia-breds are eligible for the 100% owner's bonus in all open races (there is a $10,000 cap on any one award).

Purse distribution calls for 58% to first, 20% to second, 10% to third, 6% to fourth, and fifth through 10th splitting 6% equally. 

The Maryland Jockey Club will take entries, which close Sept. 15, at 800-638-1859.

Virginia Downs Racing is the first in a series of new initiatives being conducted by the VEA which is made up of four organizations: the Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, Virginia Thoroughbred Association, Gold Cup, and Virginia Harness Horsemen's Association. A four-day harness meet is next up at Oct. 10-11 and 17-18 at the Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington, Va.

The VEA hopes to hold Thoroughbred racing at Leesburg's Morven Park beginning in 2016.
