William Stiritz's Shogood made his stakes debut in impressive fashion Aug. 22, soaring gate-to-wire to win the $100,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. III) at Arlington International Racecourse.
The 2-year-old son of Nobiz Like Shobiz rated easily on the lead for the seven-furlong test over the all-weather track, keeping about two lengths clear while setting fractions of :22.89 and :46.34 through a half-mile. Jockey Chris Emigh had a full tank turning for home, and Shogood widened away to a 2 1/2-length score in a final time of 1:24.19.
"He was pretty impressive last race and I was pretty confident today," said Emigh, who rode Shogood to a 7 3/4-length maiden-breaking victory July 16 in similar style. "Right or wrong, I'm thinking he's one of the best 2-year-olds in the country... He's just naturally fast and powerful. He's got a lot of horsepower."
Shogood, a Scott Becker trainee sent off at odds of 2-1 in a field of 11, returned $6.40, $4.40, and $3.80. Closing runner-up Van Damme paid $32.80 and $14.40 at odds of 46-1, while Missle Bomb completed the trifecta for a $5.40 show payoff at 8-1.
Will Munnings, favorite Cocked and Loaded, Discreetness, Astrologist, Cortege, O No Not U Again, Air America, and Congrats Given completed the order of finish. D. Shifflett and Richie the Bull scratched.
Shogood was bred in Illinois by Terry Morgan out of the Good and Tough mare Good and Rough, and now has two wins from three starts overall for earnings of $81,344. He was purchased privately by his current connections after running second for his breeders at first asking June 19 at Arlington.
