Santos Overcame Tough Start to Find Success

Description:

Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos won more than 4,000 races and seven Breeders' Cup events in his lengthy career, which began on a down note when he arrived in the United States from his native Chile in 1984.

Trainer P.J. Simms helped him along and got his U.S. career going. Santos, who rode Funny Cide to victory in the 2003 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), ended up retiring in 2007 after a serious riding accident at Aqueduct Racetrack. He remains grateful, however, for his many years in the racing business.
