The dog days of summer are here and sports fans everywhere are rejoicing, but not because extra pool time means they’ve finally mastered the butterfly stroke: college football is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate than with this list of pigskin-themed horse names? Read on to find some of the best football monikers racehorse owners have come up with.
1. Undrafted – He was bought cheaply but this gelding has won more than $1 million, including a top-level race on the international stage. His co-owner, who famously went undrafted himself, might ring a bell: Wes Welker.

2. Tailgating – One of college football’s finest traditions. Also, a winning racehorse.
3. Big Blue Nation – Though he now runs in West Virginia, Big Blue Nation was undoubtedly a popular hunch bet when he started his career in Kentucky, home of the Kentucky Wildcats and their Big Blue Nation of fans.
4. Tightend Touchdown – In true gridiron fashion Tightend Touchdown loves to run on turf, so much so that he’s scored more than $850,000 in earnings.

5. Johnny Football – The equine Johnny Football hasn’t quite lived up to expectations so far, but unlike his human namesake we’ve yet to hear any public apologies.
6. Tiger Walk – Auburn fans might have an affinity for this gelding, who raced for Under Armour founder Kevin Plank but now spends his time relaxing on Plank’s Maryland farm.
7. Gator Chomp – Here’s hoping that the Florida football team is more ferocious than this guy, who currently has just two wins from 52 starts.
8. Hook Em – The catchphrase of Texas fans everywhere, this colt accomplished one thing at Remington Park last year that the Longhorns didn’t: an Oklahoma win.

9. Oskee Wow Wow – This Illinois-bred mare might end up with more wins than the Fighting Illini this year, but at least they have a fight song worthy of a Thoroughbred namesake.
10. The Twelfth Man – This 12th man is actually a horse, but he’s surely cheered home by Texas A&M football fans everywhere.
11. Any Given Saturday – What we all look forward to each fall, or year-round if you’re a horse racing fan. This horse made most of his $1 million running on Saturdays.

12. Fight On – With eight wins from 47 career starts, this gelding sharing a name with the University of Southern California fight song didn’t often “fight on” in races, but he probably inspired a few wagers from Trojans fans when he ran at Santa Anita or Hollywood Park near Los Angeles.
