Martín García: Triunfador por accidente

Solemos interpretar los percances que nos pone la vida, como sucesos negativos, pero a veces sucede que sólo son una forma preparada por el destino para generar una coincidencia que cambie el rumbo de nuestra vida.
Es lo que ocurrió con Martín García cuando tuvo un accidente camino a su trabajo en Pleasanton, donde laboraba en la cocina del Chicagos's Metropolitan Deli. La dueña del local, Terri Terry, luego de que Martín se recuperara, lo llevó a su casa y ahí se dio cuenta que Martín tenía fotos montando caballos. Ella conocía a Mark Hanna, quien había sido jockey,  y fue esta persona quien lo introdujo en el mundo de las carreras de caballos comenzando a trabajar en las caballerizas como ayudante de cuadra y luego como galopador. Seis meses después llegaría al hipódromo de Golden Gate donde empezó a trabajar con el agente Roger Olguín.
El 17 de Agosto del año 2005, en su tercera carrera pública, obtuvo su primer triunfo con Wild Daydreamer en la feria de Bay Meadows. Esa misma tarde consiguió dobletear con con Spin or Win, su única otra monta en el programa.
GARCIA

El 5 de Febrero de año 2006, al ganar la última carrera del día de clausura del mitin de Bay Meadows, logra empatar la estadística con el legendario y perenne ganador de títulos locales, Russel Baze.
En abril del mismo año se traslada al sur de California, donde termina 3ro. en el mitin de Hollywood Park tras Victor Espinoza y Patrick Valenzuela.
Contando con la protección de Bob Baffert, García, oriundo de Veracruz, Méjico, ha logrado ganar importantes clásicos, siendo el más destacado hasta el momento su triunfo con Lookin at Lucky en la 135 edición de Preakness Stakes. Ha ganado en dos ocasiones el Haskell Invitational, una con Lookin at Lucky y otra con Coil, un año después. Otro triunfo resonante ha sido el conseguido con Plum Pretty en el Kentucky Oaks en Churchill Downs, además del Hollywood Gold Cup con First Dude y el American Oaks con Cambina.
GARCIA Y BAFFERT

En la pista de Del Mar ha ganado más de una docena de clásicos, incluso el Del Mar Futurity con Drill y el Malibu y Pat O´Brien con The Factor. En cada una de esas conquistas montando para el preparador Miembro del Salón de la Fama, Bob Baffert, y hoy por hoy es uno de los jinetes líderes del Sur de California.
El Domingo, García irá en busca de un nuevo desafío, ganar el prestigioso "Pacific Classic", la carrera emblema del hipódromo de Del Mar. García estará en la silla del entrenado por Baffert y favorito Game On Dude, segundo en la edición del último año y considerado por muchos como el mejor caballo en entrenamiento. Game On Dude, seis veces ganador de Grado 1, anteriormente combinó con García para ganar el 2010 Lone Star Derby. Pierda o gane, Game On Dude puede premiar el esfuerzo y trabajo hasta aquí de García. Un triunfador ... que empezó por accidente.

We tend to interpret the mishaps that life brings us, as negative events, but sometimes it happens that it’s only a form prepared by destiny to generate a coincidence that changes the course of our life.
This is what happened with Martin Garcia when he had an accident on the way to work in Pleasanton, Calif., where he worked in the kitchen of Chicagos’s Metropolitan Deli.
The owner of the premises, Terri Terry, after Martin recovered, took him to his house and then realized that Martin had pictures riding horses. She knew Mark Hanna, who had been a jockey, and it was this person who introduced him to the world of horse racing, beginning with work in the stables as an assistant and then as an exercise rider. Six months later, he would arrive at Golden Gate Fields, where he began working with jockey agent Roger Olguin.
On Aug. 17, 2005, in his third official race, Garcia earned his first win with Wild Daydreamer at the Bay Meadows Fair. That afternoon he added a second win with Spin or Win, his only other mount in the program.
On Feb. 5, 2006, by winning the last race on closing day of the Bay Meadows meet, he tied in the standings with perennial title winner Russell Baze, a local legend.
In April of the same year he moved to Southern California, where he finished third in the Hollywood Park jockey standings behind Victor Espinoza and Patrick Valenzuela.
Having the support of Bob Baffert, Garcia, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, has managed to win numerous important stakes races, the most prominent so far being his triumph aboard Lookin At Lucky in the 135th edition of the Preakness Stakes in 2010. He has twice won the Haskell Invitational, once with Lookin At Lucky and another with Coil, one year later. Other major victories achieved by Garcia occurred with Plum Pretty in the 2011 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, the 2011 Hollywood Gold Cup with First Dude and the 2011 American Oaks on Cambina.
At Del Mar, Garcia has won more than a dozen stakes events, including the 2011 Del Mar Futurity with Drill and the Malibu and Pat O'Brien with The Factor in 2011. Each of these conquests came riding for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, and today he is one of the leading riders in Southern California.
GARCIA AFTER WINNING THE PREAKNESS

On Sunday, Garcia will go in search of a new challenge, winning the prestigious Pacific Classic Stakes, Del Mar’s signature race. Garcia will ride the Baffert-trained morning-line favorite Game On Dude, second in last year's running and considered by many as the best handicap horse currently in training.
Game On Dude,  a six-time Grade 1 winner, previously teamed-up with Garcia to win the 2010 Lone Star Derby. Win or lose, it has been a triumphant ascent for Garcia ... it all started by accident.
