Win, Place, Show Fashion for the Woodbine Mile

Description:

The September 13 Woodbine Mile is the highlight of the early autumn* meet at Canada’s premier Thoroughbred venue, Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack. Not only does the winner of the race earn fame, glory, and the lion’s share of the purse money; but a berth to the Breeders’ Cup Turf at the World Championships at Keeneland Race Course on October 31 is also on the line in the Woodbine Mile. It’s a day for fantastic horse racing, great betting opportunities, tons of fun, and – if you’re a fashionista – a perfect time to show off your early fall styles.

I’ve put together six looks on three different budgets to give you a little fashion inspiration for the Woodbine Mile. They’re in order of win (most expensive), place (horse racing’s term for second place and the mid-range price for these featured looks) and show (Thoroughbred talk for third and my most affordable ensembles). I also added a final outfit at the end, which is my inspiration for what I’ll be wearing at the Woodbine Mile as I run around trying to get photos of all of the fun.
*Okay, I know that September 13 is still *technically* the summer, but only by ten days. So I’m counting it as fall.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WIN
Look 1:

15WoodbineMile_Win by penelopemiller featuring ankle boots
How great is this dress by Clover Canyon ($285)? I love the leaf pattern, which welcomes the fall, but the colors keep it just summery enough. I added a pair of dove gray Marc Ellis booties for $291 and a $228 Dooney & Burke sky blue handbag.  I finished everything off with a fabulous $56 fascinator from Monsson, a statement cocktail ring for $149 from QVC in a contrasting burnt umber color, and a killer pair of Tory Burch shades for $175. You can get this whole look for $1,184, which hopefully can all be won back at the betting windows at Woodbine on Mile Day!
Look 2:

I am in love with this MSGM skirt for $170 – it’s that fabled staple wardrobe piece that really is perfect for summer, fall and spring. I added a simple cream camisole ($8.99, Tilly’s) to layer underneath the chic $186 Toy G. blazer. Throw on a pair of forest green Tory Burch pumps for $197 and a $90 River Island handbag, and complete your accessories with a pair of turquoise drop earrings ($46, Rivka Friedman) and a floppy hat ($24, Charlotte Russe) and you’re off to the races for $721.99.

PLACE
Look 1:

If it’s chilly, what better way to welcome autumn weather than a stunning coat? I love this $48 plaid number from Maykool, which is a style that was all over the fall runways for 2015. I added a pair of $41 Simply Be jeans and these amazing boots for $23 from H&M that I need to go out and buy today. A black sweater ($50, Zara) looks fresh thanks to the cut-outs; finish everything off with a $45 Rimen and Co. mock-croc handbag, a $12 Accessorize.com earcuff and a tank watch for $95 from Isaac Mizrahi. A swipe of this $6 NYC lipstick and you’re stylish and warm for Woodbine Mile for a grand total of $320.
Look 2:

We have another coat as the focal point of the look in this outfit, because how amazing is the collar on this $58 Blackfive trench? I layered it over a simple navy dress ($40, also by Blackfive) and added a pair of $79 Michael Antonio Bjorn boots. The bag, $29 from SheInside, is a perfect transition piece for summer-to-fall, and I kind of love the retro pillbox hat ($17, Vbiger) as a topper. Finish the look off with a statement necklace ($30, Anouk) to really drive home the drama of the coat’s collar, and you’re dressed and ready to go to the track for $253.
SHOW
Look 1:

15WoodbineMile_Show1 by penelopemiller featuring twist jewelry
How fantastic is this $39 dress from Lookbook.com? I love the drama of the high waistline and the houndstooth pattern. I’m not, however, wild about the zipper design element at the neck; so to camouflage that, I introduced this twisted pearl necklace for $9.90 from Forever21. The peep-toe booties are $25 from Burlington Coat Factory, and I’m obsessed with this forest green handbag with a faux-fur pom-pom for $41 from Yes Style. The sunglasses, which incorporate the green of the bag, are $8.90 from New Coming; and I love the pop this $32 Kate Bissett cocktail ring gives the look. I also added my go-to liquid eyeliner, which is Maybelline Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner for a whopping $4.39, because I would rock a major cat-eye motif with this look. All together, this ensemble comes to $160.19 from top to toe – that’ll leave some extra betting and cocktail money in your purse!
Look 2:

15WoodbineMile_Show by penelopemiller featuring a red cardigan
This River Island skirt is $50, but to me it looks much more expensive. I paired it with a $30 Zara cardigan, and then layered a skinny belt ($13, Simply Be) to make sure the look stays sleek. The black patent leather T-strap shoes are just $45 from Unique Vintage, and I love the sophistication of this $27 handbag from Zaful. The silhouette of these Kenneth Jay Lane earrings ($25) is very in right now, and how can you resist this $24.99 pewter-hued fascinator from Swan? With this look, you’ll be race-day ready for $214.99.
ONE MORE:
Finally, here’s approximately what I’ll be wearing for the Woodbine Mile:

I try to mix style with utility when I’m at the races: I love to dress up; but I also am taking photos all day, so I wind up climbing over, on top of, and under all sorts of obstacles to get a good shot. That means that short dresses, fascinators, and high heels are out for me; but I still like to look presentable for a major day of racing.
For the Woodbine Mile, I’ll likely have on a pair of dark jeans; these $39 versions from ililily are right up my alley. I love this graphic sweater ($42, Hartstrings) and I’ll likely layer it under my trusty gray leather jacket. The one pictured is a pricey MICHAEL Michael Kors version I found on Ebay for $249.99, but I got mine at Nordstrom Rack a few years ago for about $90. (Thank you, eternally, to my friend Alicia who insisted that I buy it. It’s my favorite article of clothing by far!) I love these playful Vince Camuto earrings for $35, and I’ll be shellacking on some nail polish (I love this jet color from Butter for $5.99.) And if you’ve ever seen me at the races, it’s likely I was in my trusty pair of Chucks, which are a bargain at any price… but especially at their $50 retail value. I’m an evangelist for cheap sunglasses, since I am constantly leaving them places (I’m looking at you, airline security X-ray machines) and I love this $8.99 pair from Necessary Clothing. Add a couple of Canon cameras and that’s my look for the Woodbine Mile!
I hope to see you on September 13 for the #WoMile, but if you can’t make it to Woodbine, just remember that you can tune into the race on FOX Sports 1 to catch all the action!
