An early-morning fire June 16 at a backstretch barn on the grounds of Saratoga Casino Hotel, a harness track in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., resulted in the deaths of 17 horses June 16 and forced the day's cancellation of racing. An initial report from the track on Tuesday morning noted that at least seven horses had died.
According to the track and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, the blaze was reported at approximately 2:30 a.m. ET in a barn housing about 18 horses. One horse escaped the barn and had only minor injuries. No humans were reported injured.
The horses belonged to two trainers: Robyn Mangiardi, who lost 11, and Timothy Benson, who lost six.
The fire was contained to a single barn. Security personnel from both Saratoga Casino Hotel and nearby Saratoga Race Course, along with emergency responders, evacuated horses from neighboring barns and secured the surrounding area.
"The loss suffered today is heartbreaking for our racing community," said Sam Gerrity, CEO of Saratoga Casino Hotel. "Our thoughts remain with Robyn, Tim, their teams, the horse owners, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We are deeply grateful to the security personnel, first responders, and racing staff whose swift actions helped protect the horses and people in the surrounding barns."
The area remains closed as investigators continue to determine the cause of the fire.
This is horrible news at the Saratoga Harness track where many horses perished at a barn fire this morning. No cause was reported yet as the investigation continues. We don't want to report the number of horses lost yet as the number come in. @WTEN @ABC7NY @FoxNews @cnnbrk pic.twitter.com/omb7dtGTDD

The barn area at Saratoga Casino Hotel, which races Standardbreds, is across Nelson Avenue from historic Saratoga Race Course, where Thoroughbreds are stabled.
With Thoroughbred racing in New York ongoing at Aqueduct Racetrack, the Saratoga Race Course barn area is not yet full. Saratoga Race Course last raced during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival earlier this month and will begin its summer meet in July. Sometimes Thoroughbreds are stabled at the harness track as an option when the Saratoga barn area lacks stall space, but no Thoroughbreds are currently stabled there, according to a NYRA spokesperson.
Representatives of the New York Thoroughbred industry expressed their support for their Standardbred counterparts.
"New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. (NYTB) extends our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by this morning's tragic barn fire at Saratoga Casino Harness," Najja Thompson, executive director of the NYTB, said in a statement posted on social media. "The loss of any horse is deeply felt throughout the racing and breeding community, and our thoughts are with all those impacted by this devastating event.
"We are grateful for the efforts of the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, emergency responders, track personnel, and all those who worked tirelessly to assist during this difficult situation.
"New York's racing and breeding industries are a close-knit community, and we stand with our colleagues in the Standardbred industry as they begin the difficult process of recovery and healing."
"Horse racing in New York is a community of hard-working people linked together by a shared commitment to the horses," NYRA president and CEO Dave O'Rourke added in another statement. "This morning's tragic fire at the Saratoga Hotel Casino Harness Track will have a profound impact on that community, and NYRA extends our condolences to all those affected by this loss.
"NYRA stands ready to support our neighbors at Saratoga Hotel Casino with any assistance they may need at this time."
A GoFundMe account has been set up by harness racing photographer Jessica Hallett to assist those who have been directly affected.
Kentucky Derby (G1)-winning trainer Cherie DeVaux, who has family roots at the harness track, also plans to donate items for auction on a platform to be announced.
