V. E. Day Stretches Out in Temperence Hill

Description:

Last year's Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner V. E. Day will get a class break on Saturday, Sept. 12 when he starts in the $200,000 Temperence Hill Stakes at Belmont Park.

Magalen Bryant's V.E. Day has not won since his upset victory in the Travers, but the son of English Channel   has raced exclusively in graded stakes in the five starts since his close Travers win for trainer Jimmy Jerkens, where he defeated stablemate Wicked Strong by a nose.

While V.E. Day was little factor in his most recent start, a fifth-place finish in the Whitney Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 8 at Saratoga Race Course, he finished second by a nose to Coach Inge in the 1 1/2-mile Brooklyn Invitational Stakes (gr. II) June 6 at Belmont. He'll add another furlong to that distance in the 1 5/8-mile Temperence Hill.

The top threat to V.E. Day in the short field of four appears to be Flaxman Holdings homebred Tacticus, an A.P. Indy filly who won the 1 3/4-length mile Birdstone Stakes Aug. 13 at Saratoga.
