Juveniles Effusive, Salahudin Deliver on Debut

This column highlights the performances of 2- and 3-year-old maidens (the latter category only through June) with the potential for graded stakes success based on criteria such as a horse who has made no more than five starts and either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, has siblings that are graded/group winners, or has dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.

Spendthrift Farm's impeccably bred homebred juvenile Effusive, out of two-time champion Monomoy Girl , was the most recent to win July 18 at Saratoga Race Course, overcoming a troubled trip over a sloppy track for trainer Brad Cox.

The daughter of seven-time leading North American sire Into Mischief   was a step slow leaving from along the rail, but was quickly guided by jockey Manny Franco to race in midpack, along the inside. Effusive began advancing down the backstretch, carefully weaving through traffic, while chasing pacesetter Cruising Again , who set initial fractions of :22.22 and :45.61.

Effusive was slightly angled off the rail entering the far turn after slipping past the fading Have Hope , and swung three-wide into the stretch full of run. Despite being bumped by runner-up Key Colony Beach  just outside the three-sixteenths pole, the talented filly never lost momentum. She powered past Cruising Again, who fought on toward her inside, and drew away under confident handling to score by 1 1/4 lengths. She completed the 6-furlong dash in a final time of 1:11.69, earning a 76 Equibase Speed Figure and a 73 Beyer Speed Figure. She paid $6.10 to win as the favorite.

She is the second foal produced by Monomoy Girl. Her first foal, a full brother to Effusive named Provenance🔥 , won second time out last year as a juvenile and was later third in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. With his racing career derailed by injury since, Provenance will stand next year at stud at Country Life Farm near Bel Air, Md., for an advertised fee of $2,000.

As for Monomoy Girl, also trained by Cox, her renowned racing campaign included 14 wins from 17 starts, totaling $4,776,818 in earnings. Of her 10 graded stakes victories, she captured seven grade 1s, highlighted by the 2018 Kentucky Oaks (G1), as well as two runnings of the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) in 2018 and 2020.

She raced for owners Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables from 2018 through the 2020 Breeders' Cup before Spendthrift Farm bought her for $9.5 million from The November Sale at Fasig-Tipton days later. She raced twice in 2021 for owners My Racehorse Stable, Spendthrift Farm, and Madaket Stables before being retired from racing and joining Spendthrift Farm's broodmare band.

Baffert Trainee Salahudin Scores at Ellis 

With Baffert in attendance July 17 at Ellis Park, Salahudin graduated from a straight maiden race with a 2-length victory.

Backed to 1-2 favoritism off a series of promising works at Churchill Downs, where Baffert has a string of horses this year, Salahuden was expected by many bettors to waltz in the 6 1/2-furlong race. But he needed encouragement from jockey Florent Geroux, first to advance into contention after a somewhat lackadaisical opening first furlong, and then late on the turn when in second place as early leader Round Up  briefly spurted away.

But Salahudin ultimately responded, took over from a fading Round Up and maintained a clear advantage through the lane to keep second favorite Jokester  at bay. Appearing to idle by flicking an ear forward once in front, Salahudin was clocked in 1:18.13 with a final sixteenth in :06.69. Early splits in the race, set by Round Up, were :22.42 and :45.62.

Salahudin paid $3.14 for a $2 win wager.

The win earned an 83 Equibase Speed Figure and a lesser 57 Beyer Speed Figure. It seems reasonable to expect him to run faster as he becomes more eager with racing experience.

The winner is a 2-year-old son of Uncle Mo out of the stakes-placed Smart Strike mare Weekend Strike . His second dam, Weekend Storm, a full sister to 1990 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Summer Squall, produced numerous stakes winners, including 2011 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner Court Vision .

Salahudin, bred by Newstead, is a half brother to Sizzling , a group 3 winner in Ireland for Aidan O'Brien and her Coolmore-affiliated ownership.

Donato Lanni, as agent for owner Amr Zedan or Zedan Racing, bought Salahudin for $325,000 from the Denali Stud consignment at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale.
