Streaking Calgary Cat Heads Bold Venture

Champion Calgary Cat has been one of Woodbine's top sprinters again this year, winning three of four starts (all stakes). He brings a two-race win streak to the Sept. 13 Bold Venture Stakes (Can-III), a 6 1/2-furlong event that goes as race three on the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Can-IT) undercard with an approximate post time of 1:55 p.m. ET.



A 5-year-old gelding by Cowtown Cat   out of the A.P. Indy mare Big Sink Star, Calgary Cat is the defending Bold Venture winner, taking last year's running by three lengths. He was also Canada's top sprinter, winning five of seven starts. This year he won the Jacques Cartier Stakes in mid-May, then after dropping the Vigil Stakes (Can-III), ripped off victories in the Achievement and Ontario Jockey Club stakes. His three wins have come at six furlongs and he's been the favorite in each start this season.



Racing for Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman and trainer Kevin Attard, Calgary Cat will tote top weight of 124 pounds in the Bold Venture. Calgary Cat is also 3-2-0 at the trip from five starts.



Steady Essence Hit Man, the champion sprinter in 2011 and 2012, can strike at any time and was second behind Calgary Cat last time in the Aug. 12 Ontario Jockey Club—his first start since November 2013. The 8-year-old Speightstown   gelding owns a 12-6-3 record from 24 Woodbine starts, figures to be tighter second-time out, and will be the one to catch from post 3.



Jal Dastur's Endless Light brings in the top recent Equibase Speed Figures. The 5-year-old mare won the seven-furlong Sweet Briar Too Stakes July 1, then dropped a nose decision in the grade III Seaway Stakes Aug. 8. Both efforts came at seven furlongs.
