Mallory Consigns First Million-Dollar Yearling

Scott Mallory has brought horses through sales rings for nearly two decades, but Aug. 10 proved to be a uniquely special night at Fasig-Tipton's The Saratoga Sale.

The third-generation horseman had seen several of his horses tick higher and higher before the gavel fell, but had not seen one cross over the million-dollar mark. That changed Monday night as Hip 40, a daughter of Candy Ride   he consigned for Matt Dorman's Determined Stud, went to Legion Bloodstock and Gracie Bloodstock for $1,075,000.

"We've come close. I sold one for eight something one year, and we thought we were going to get close," Mallory said. "We sold one at Keeneland for almost nine. It's good to finally get one over ($1 million)."

Mallory and Dorman have been coming to the Saratoga sale for five years now, and Mallory said nights like Monday night are the reason why.

"I'm excited. I'm excited for Mr. Dorman, who's put so much into this. I mean, what else can you say? It's why we get up at 5 every morning and spend nights at the barn and everything else."

Mallory has gained the faith of many buyers over the years, including the teams at Legion Bloodstock, who purchased the filly on behalf of Andrew Hudson's Hoolie Racing and an unnamed partner, and Gracie Bloodstock, who acted as agent for Anthony Tate.

"Scott consistently brings really nice horses to every sale that he's involved in," Legion's Kyle Zorn said. "We'll ask Scott his opinion of the stuff he brings, and when he sticks his neck out for one like he did on this filly, it carries a lot of weight with us.

"He's a really good horseman, his consignment is always filled with good horses. If he's got one he really likes and he let's you know, it gets us excited, too."

The Candy Ride filly is out of the winning Street Sense   mare Off Topic , who finished third in both the 2019 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and Gazelle Stakes (G2). This filly is her second foal, with her 3-year-old More Than Ready colt, Running Ready, unraced but breezing consistently at Churchill Downs since mid-June.

Off Topic is out of the winning stakes-placed Include mare Off Limits, who also produced Dreams Are Free , the dam of 2025 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Winterberry .

In addition to her pedigree, she has the physical to go with it.

"We felt like she had the best female physical in the whole sale," Zorn said. "She's got a lot of size to her. She looks like a big, scopey, two-turn filly, which is what the partnership was looking for. Whit (Beckman) has done very well with these types."

Zorn said the filly will head to Travis Durr Training Center in South Carolina for her initial training before joining trainer Whit Beckman's Kentucky operation.
