Kentucky Downs Postpones Sept. 12 Races

Description:

Kentucky Downs has postponed its Sept. 12 card because of a rain-softened turf course and will move each race to Sept. 14, according to track president Corey Johnsen.

"We got a half-inch of rain today," Johnsen said. "We made a decision that the course was too soft and we wanted to make sure the card went off. The forecast looks good for Sunday and Monday, and our maintenance crew is confident they can get the course ready."

With Kentucky Horse Racing Commission authorization, the races will move from Saturday to Monday intact, although because of racing rules already announced scratched horses will be unable to re-enter. Also-eligible entries will not be able to run on the Monday card, as well. Post time Monday will be 1:35 p.m. CDT.

"Unfortunately, scratch time has already passed and the horses that were scratched will be unable to participate," Kentucky Downs racing secretary Tyler Picklesimer said. "With that being said, field size should remain strong for the day and the remainder of the meet."

The Monday card will feature four stakes: the $300,000 Dueling Grounds Derby, $300,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint, $300,000 Kentucky Downs Turf Dash, and the $600,000 Kentucky Turf Cup (gr. IIIT). Purses offered Monday will exceed $2.2 Million.

On Sept. 10 the Franklin, Ky. track had to cancel its final eight races when jockeys decided not to ride the rest of the card because of soft ground.

To make up for the lost races from Sept. 10, Kentucky Downs will close out the race meeting with 13-race cards Sept. 16 and Sept. 19. The first race on both of those days will be at 12:05 p.m. CDT.
