The latest chapter in the 140-year history of Lexington's Red Mile harness operation begins at noon, Sept. 12, with the opening of a $42 million renovation that will include historical racing along with live and simulcast wagering.
KRM Wagering, a joint venture between Keeneland Association and Red Mile, will include 902 historical racing terminals, introducing to the Lexington market a new form of gaming that has been successful at Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park.
"The evolution of horse racing is now fully operational," said Joe Costa, Red Mile president, in a statement. "We invite our old friends as well as new fans to enjoy an entertainment destination unlike any other in Kentucky."
"Our staff is ready to guide customers through the steps of playing this new pari-mutuel wager," said KRM Wagering COO Annie Allman. "There are a number of themes to choose from at varying betting levels as well."
"Historical racing will generate revenue to increase purse levels to help keep us competitive with other states," said Vince Gabbert, COO of Keeneland.
"There were over 200 new jobs created to support this facility," said Red Mile's CFO Shannon Cobb. "And our long term plans for other entertainment and retail development will have an even greater impact on the local economy."
The opening week's hours (all Eastern) of operation for Red Mile are noon-midnight Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m.-midnight Tuesday-Thursday, and 11 a.m. Friday-2 a.m. Saturday.
