Burnham Square Enters Kentucky Turf Cup on a Roll

After winning four straight stakes this year, Burnham Square🔥  has established himself as North America's top threat against top international runners in the 1 1/2-mile Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

The $2 million Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational Stakes (G2T) Sept. 5 at Kentucky Downs figures to provide more clues on how he measures up as he'll face several of those overseas runners, including 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Ethical Diamond , in the deepest edition of this race to date. 

Already a grade 1 winner on dirt, via the 2025 Bluegrass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland ahead of a sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Burnham Square secured his first top-level turf victory last-out in the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million Stakes (G1T) Aug. 1 at Colonial Downs. That victory followed three straight stakes wins at 1 3/8-miles or longer on turf for the Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred who last summer was switched to the green by trainer Ian Wilkes.

"He's clicked along really well going into this race," Wilkes said. "It's a very intriguing race, and it'll be a fun challenge. You have the European horses coming with the local horses, so the competition is getting deeper."

A victory Saturday would punch a fees-paid Breeders' Cup entry, as the Kentucky Downs test is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" to the Turf.

Burnham Square, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, has experience on the European style turf course at Kentucky Downs. Last year his stretch rally came up just short in the Nashville Derby Invitational Stakes (G3T)—a day in which early runners fared well on the course. Also, Wilkes noted that Saturday's 1 1/2-mile test will be more to Burnham Square's liking than the 1 5/16-mile Nashville Derby.

This year's strong field could push this race to grade 1 status in the near future. Ethical Diamond returns to the United States for the first time since his upset Breeders' Cup Turf score and trainer Willie Mullins gave him a smart prep in the Ballyroan Stakes (G3) Aug. 6 at Leopardstown, where the 6-year-old son of Awtaad  secured victory in the final strides. 

As both Burnham Square and Ethical Diamond typically rally from off the pace, the door could open for last year's winner of this race, Ole Crazy Bone . Trained by Mike Maker for Flying P Stable, the 6-year-old Ghostzapper gelding raced just off the pace before opening up late to secure a decisive win in the 2025 Kentucky Turf Cup. Two starts ago he led every step in a narrow victory in the Bowling Green Stakes (G2T) at Saratoga Race Course.

Ethical Diamond is the 3-1 second-choice while two other European-trained runners are listed at 9-2. Six-year-old mare Tiffany  will take on the boys again after defeating them in the Grosser Preis von Berlin (G1). That ended a run of five straight runner-up finishes in stakes, including three group 1s, for the Sir Mark Prescott trainee. While Tiffany will start from the inside, Fitriani Hay's Fort George  will start from the outside in the expected field of 10. In his U.S. debut, the group 3 winner finished a close second to Ole Crazy Bone in the Bowling Green.
