Grade 1 Winners Look to Rebound in Woodford, TCA

Grade 2-level sprinters kick off the stakes action Oct. 3 at Keeneland, starting with males on turf in the Woodford Stakes (G2T) in the sixth race, followed a race later by females on dirt in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2).

Though the two $400,000 stakes are lesser in quality than the three grade 1s later on the Saturday card, both drew solid lineups with existing top-level stakes winners.

The TCA is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, providing an automatic paid berth into the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Keeneland. The Woodford is not a formal qualifier but still serves as a race over the course for those pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), also Oct. 31.

Patricias Hope's Nobals , one of 10 participants in the 5 1/2-furlong Woodford, upset the 2023 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park at 12-1 odds. He is 3-for-16 since, including 0-for-3 in 2026. His Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint-winning jockey, Gerardo Corrales, returns in the irons for trainer Larry Rivelli.

The seven-horse Thoroughbred Club of America at 6 1/2 furlongs is headed by Stonestreet Stables' Eclatant , who began her 2026 campaign with three victories, including in the Madison Stakes (G1) in the spring at Keeneland. She looks to rebound from a soundly beaten seventh-place finish in the Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga this summer for trainer Brad Cox.

If neither horse returns to form, the Woodford and Thoroughbred Club of America appear up for grabs.

Joe Shiesty , Motorious  and My Boy Prince  are all stakes-winning millionaires in the Woodford, and other entrants such as Mondogetsbuckets , No Nay Hudson🔥  and Doncho  have the qualifications to threaten.

Irad Ortiz Jr. Back From Injury

JAL Racing's Doncho, trained by Michelle Lovell, picks up Irad Ortiz Jr., who is scheduled to resume riding Oct. 2 at Keeneland after being sidelined from an injury at Saratoga Race Course since Aug. 8.

Ortiz is also on Eclatant, as he was aboard the Into Mischief   4-year-old filly in the Madison and in taking the Chicago Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs in June.

Gabriel "Spider" Duignan's Echo Sound also exits the Ballerina at Saratoga, where she ran a quality fourth. Prominent from the start, she fell just short of a valuable grade 1 placing when Beauty Reigns  caught her by a neck for the show. A dual grade 3 winner, she should benefit from a slight cutback in distance from the Ballerina's 7 furlongs to the TCA's shorter trip. She has a stakes win and a second in two starts at 6 1/2 furlongs.

The field also includes past TCA winners Praying  (2025) and Zeitlos🔥  (2024).
