Skychai Racing's Da Big Hoss, claimed for $50,000 in June, made big on that investment with an off-the-pace victory in the $600,000 Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-olds and up Sept. 14 at Kentucky Downs.

Trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Joe Rocco Jr., Da Big Hoss, never worse than third in seven of eight previous starts on grass, caught the early leaders in the 1 1/2-mile Kentucky Turf Cup and pulled away late to win in 2:33.40 on a course rated good. The winner paid $10.60 in a field of 12.

Power Ped, who tracked in third for most of the way and bid for the lead in the stretch, finished second, while early leader Roman Approval was third and St. Albans Boy fourth.

Da Big Hoss, a 4-year-old colt by Lemon Drop Kid out of the Touch Gold mare Lady Struck Gold, was bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West Stables. In his most recent start he won the restricted John's Call Stakes at 1 5/8 miles on the turf at Saratoga Race Course.
