Second time's the charm proved to be an expensive but rewarding truth for Mark Casse when he secured Mischief (Hip 755), a colt by Into Mischief , on behalf of D. J. Stable for $700,000 Oct. 20 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale.
After missing out on the colt last month at Keeneland's September Yearling Sale, where he failed to meet his reserve—reaching a final bid of $625,000—Hall of Fame trainer Casse capitalized on a rare second chance.
"We bid on him (in September). We just didn't bid as much," Casse said. "I just liked him so much. I was looking at him yesterday and I was on the phone and I saw him go by, and I said to Sam, my assistant, 'He's a runner.'
"I called up Jon Green and I said, 'This is the one I want.'"
Casse said he thought the colt might bring more than the final bid of $700,000.
"I think he's changed a little bit (from September). I just really like what I saw," he said. "I'm really lucky that I have people when I see something I like; they step up. The Greens have been unbelievable for us and hopefully we can bring home a Breeders' Cup in 10 days (for them)."
D. J. Stable campaigns its homebred Nitrogen , last year's champion 3-year-old filly and top contender for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) with Casse.
Hip 755 was bred in Kentucky by Peter Blum Thoroughbreds and consigned by Bridie Harrison, agent. He is out of the graded stakes-placed Candy Ride mare Co Cola. The colt is a half brother to grade 1 winner and Kentucky Oaks (G1) runner-up Search Results (Flatter), who earned nearly $2 million during her career before selling to Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm for $3.6 million at Fasig-Tipton's The November Sale in 2023.
Blum bought the colt's dam Co Cola in 2022 at the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale for $600,000 in foal to Flatter.
Co Cola is a half sister to Kingdom Road, who finished third in the 2016 Clasico Jockey Club del Peru (G1).
Meanwhile, Co Cola's dam Yong Musician is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Kimchi, as well as King of Jazz, who finished second in the 2005 Queen's Plate at Woodbine, and stakes placed Deputy Jazz. Furthermore, Yong Musician's half sister Jazzmane produced multiple grade 1 winner Mind Your Biscuits.
Blum, who has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for over 40 years, is best known for breeding 2020 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and Horse of the Year Authentic and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner and 2024 champion older dirt male National Treasure🔥 . Blum was named National Breeder of the Year in 2020 by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.
