Several of the best 3-year-old fillies in the country are scheduled to compete at Parx Racing on Saturday in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes, which has a purse of $1-million.
Four of the 12 fillies entered in the Cotillion already have Grade 1 victories on their résumés, so it should come as no surprise that this looks like an extremely competitive race when previewing it on paper.
Below are the horses that I view as the leading contenders in the Cotillion:
#1 Tara’s Tango: This filly will be shipping in from California for the Cotillion, but trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is one of the best trainers in the business, so I do not envision the transcontinental voyage being much of an issue for her. Tara’s Tango has never finished worse than second in her five career races, including a heartbreaking loss by a nose to Stellar Wind in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita in June. Top-class jockey Mike Smith is scheduled to ride, and I think Tara’s Tango will get a perfect trip from her inside post in the Cotillion.

#3 Embellish the Lace: When you take a look at the most recent races by the fillies entered in the Cotillion, Embellish the Lace definitely looks the most impressive by virtue of her win in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 22. However, Embellish the Lace has been most successful in the past when she has been able to run along on an unpressured early lead in her races, which seems like an unlikely scenario in the Cotillion on Saturday. Jockey Javier Castellano, who won the Alabama Stakes with Embellish the Lace in her last race, will ride again.
#7 Peace and War: She has not competed in a race since finishing second in the Delaware Oaks on July 11, but perhaps the time off will benefit her in the Cotillion. Peace and War’s trainer, Graham Motion, does well after giving his horses a brief time away from the races. She made a splash in the United States when she won the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland Race Course last fall, and has finished second in her two most recent races after a pair of poor efforts earlier in 2015. Jockey Joel Rosario will team up with Peace and War for the first time on Saturday.
#8 I'm a Chatterbox: In her most recent race, I’m a Chatterbox finished in second in the Alabama Stakes behind the aforementioned Embellish the Lace. Prior to the Alabama, I’m a Chatterbox finished first in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga, but rather than earning her third career graded stakes victory, she was disqualified for interference in the stretch and placed second. Florent Geroux, who has ridden I’m a Chatterbox in all six of her races so far in 2015, will be back aboard for the Cotillion on Saturday.
#10 Eskenformoney: This filly has been knocking on the door at a victory in a graded stakes race, including most recently her second-place finish in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks on Aug. 21. Eskenformoney ran well at Gulfstream Park over the winter — she was never worse than third in four starts at Gulfstream — before a couple of poor efforts in Grade 1 races in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and the Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park. Eskenformoney’s connections include seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher and Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, which add to her intrigue in the Cotillion.
