Billy's Star, winner of the Aug. 23 Victoria Park Stakes last time out, heads a group of eight sophomores, including Victoria runner-up Firespike, in the $150,000 Ontario Derby (Can-III) Sept. 20 at Woodbine.
Perfect Timber Partnership's Billy's Star, a 3-year-old Ontario-bred son of Perfect Soul , won the Victoria Park by 1 1/4 lengths with a driving five-wide move from the back of the pack under Alan Garcia, who gets the mount back here from post seven.
The Roger Attfield trainee shares highweight assignment of 119 pounds with Firespike, who made a four-wide rally from fifth in the Victoria but was outkicked by his rival, and with Breaking Lucky, who two starts back upset the Prince of Wales Stakes at odds of 13-1 to spoil hopes of a 2015 Canadian Triple Crown.
Firespike leaves the 3 hole with Luis Contreras in the irons, while Breaking Lucky—who needs to recover from a failed turf bid where he wound up ninth in the Breeders' Stakes Aug. 16—will have regular rider James McAleney aboard from post 5 for trainer Reade Baker.
British import Beat Goes On could figure here in his North American debut under Emma-Jayne Wilson. The Charles Hills trainee should be well-rested off a July 23 win at Wolverhampton.
Others of interest include Deputy Minister Stakes winner Kingsport, who is cross-entered in the Sept. 19 Overstake Stakes, and 2014 Coronation Futurity winner Decision Day, who has not won since last November and comes in off a fourth in the July 26 Toronto Cup Stakes.
Maiden winners Ethical Funds and Lucky Lindy complete the lineup.
