Donato Lanni and John Youngblood's Avanzare will seek his third straight graded turf score Sept. 27 in the $200,000 City of Hope Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park.
Last seen in the Del Mar Mile (gr. IIT) Aug. 23, the 5-year-old gelding rallied five wide to win by a half-length over grade I winner Talco, who also returns for the City of Hope. It was the Tom Proctor trainee's first start off a nearly seven-month layoff, after taking the Arcadia (gr. IIT) in January.
BALAN: Avanzare Goes Wide to Win Del Mar Mile
Avanzare may be in the best form, but there are two horses in the field who have proven they can beat the son of Grand Reward. Back in November of 2014, speedy Big Cazanova finished 7 1/2 lengths clear of Avanzare in the Native Diver (gr. IIIT) over Del Mar's then-synthetic main track, and Big Bane Theory took last year's edition of the City of Hope, in which Avanzare came in third.
