My Meadowview Farm's homebred Tin Type Gal went from maiden winner in her previous start to grade III winner in the Sept. 27 Miss Grillo Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on the grass at Belmont Park.
With Luis Saez riding for trainer Graham Motion, Tin Type Gal sat off tepid early fractions in fifth-place early, was guided off the rail by her rider on the backstretch, and rallied in the stretch to just get past Thrilled, who grabbed the lead from inside in the lane from just off the early pace. The final time for 1 1/16 miles around one turn was a good 1:41.41 on firm turf.
The Miss Grillo is a "Win and You're In" event for the Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT). Tin Type Gal, now two-for-three and two-for-two on the grass, is a Kentucky-bred by Tapit out of the Deputy Minister mare Miss Shop.
Tin Type Gal paid $9.70 as the third choice in the 10-horse field. She beat second choice Thrilled by a nose, with fourth choice Time and Motion third and favored Llanita, in from France, fourth.
Motion indicated the Breeders' Cup, to be held at Keeneland, is under consideration.
"You have to think about the Breeders' Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf), that's why we're here," Motion said. "We're all pointing for those races. I was thrilled with the way she ran. She's a nice filly. I always thought she went better on the synthetic, which makes you think turf, but to be honest, I think she'll handle the dirt. I think she'll be a superior grass horse."
Len Riggio of My Meadowview Farm said Tin Type Gal "looks like the real deal. She's a homebred, and it feels good when you see them growing up. It looks like the Breeders' Cup is next; we're talking about it."
