Keeneland Race Course takes center stage with its Fall Stars opening weekend, and one of the main attractions on a Saturday card that includes three Grade 1 races is the 102nd running of the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
The $500,000, Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity attracts some of the best 2-year-olds in the country to compete in one of the most prestigious races for 2-year-olds. The Breeders’ Futurity also is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series race for the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, so the winner of this race will be guaranteed a starting spot in the $2-million Juvenile on Oct. 31.
The Breeders’ Futurity drew a field of 12, and since all of the entrants are only two, most of the contenders are fairly inexperienced with only two or three career races under their belts. After studying the past performances and watching video replays of a few of these horses’ prior races, below are my main contenders in this year’s edition of the Breeders’ Futurity:
#1 Rated R Superstar: This colt has competed in three races in his career and has never finished worse than second, so he appears to own a nice combination of talent and consistency. His most recent effort, a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs, should make him competitive in the Breeders’ Futurity on Saturday.
#6 Sticksstatelydude: Similar to Rated R Superstar, this colt also has never finished worse than second so far in his career, including most recently a win in a maiden race at Saratoga Race Course. However, Sticksstatelydude has not competed in a race since Aug. 1, so I do question his fitness level moving into the Breeders’ Futurity.
#7 Exaggerator: This colt has won two consecutive races, one in California and one in New York, and now brings his game to Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. Exaggerator is the only horse in the Breeders’ Futurity field who has ever crossed the finish line first in a graded stakes race. He captured the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes on Aug. 16.

#8 Sheikh of Sheikhs: Similar to Sticksstatelydude, this colt also most recently won a maiden race (a race restricted to horses who have never won a race in their careers) at Saratoga Race Course. Sheikh of Sheikhs showed a lot of early speed directly out of the starting gate in that win at Saratoga, and I think a similar racing strategy will suit him well in the Breeders’ Futurity.
#9 Wild Man: This colt is still a maiden, meaning he has never before won a race, so he is certainly a step behind some of the other horses in the Breeders’ Futurity field who have already won one or more races. That being said, Wild Man has finished third in his two career races, so he has not run poorly by any means, and he has one of the best trainers in the game in Steve Asmussen calling the shots.
