Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan will make an appearance on opening weekend at Keeneland on Saturday for the fifth consecutive year, but this time he will be parading for fans rather than racing in the Shadwell Turf Mile.
Wise Dan was retired from racing last month after a tendon injury was discovered when prepping for a start in the Woodbine Mile. He will be paraded in the Keeneland paddock and in front of the grandstand during the track’s third race on Saturday, scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET.
The 8-year-old gelding has been based at Keeneland under trainer Charlie LoPresti throughout his career and counts two editions of the Shadwell Turf Mile among his record seven stakes victories at the track, including last year’s race which turned out to be the final start of his career.
Racing for owner-breeder Morton Fink, the versatile Wise Dan won the Grade 1 Clark Handicap on dirt as well as 10 other Grade 1 races, retiring with 14 consecutive victories on turf.

“I’m not bragging on my horse, because his record speaks for itself,” LoPresti said when discussing Wise Dan’s accomplishments. “But the really good horses, they find a way to win no matter what happens in a race.”
Wise Dan won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in each of his Horse of the Year seasons and amassed earnings of $7,552,920 over five years of racing, with a total of six Eclipse Awards to his credit. He will retire to LoPresti’s farm near Lexington, Ky.
