Five last-out maiden winners hope to capture graded credentials Oct. 4 in the $150,000 Mazarine Stakes (Can-III) for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine.
Ivan Dalos' Gamble's Ghost has been tagged as the commanding morning-line favorite at 4-5 and the Ghostzapper filly is the only Mazarine entrant with graded experience. She was second to Catch a Glimpse as the 3-2 favorite in the Sept. 12 Natalma Stakes (Can-IIT) last time out on the Woodbine turf course, but returns to the synthetic main train for the 1 1/16-mile Mazarine.
NOVAK: Catch a Glimpse Rolls to Natalma Score
Gamble's Ghost, trained by Josie Carroll, broke her maiden on the Woodbine Polytrack at seven furlongs Aug. 14, when she closed mightily from eighth to win by 8 1/4 lengths.
Debut winner Garavogue Colleen, listed at 10-1, is the only other filly in the field with two-turn experience. The gray or roan daughter of Sligo Bay stalked and pounced in her first and only start, a 1 1/16-mile off-the-turf contest at Woodbine she won by 3 1/4 lengths.
All but Gamble's Ghost are entering off maiden-breaking wins.
Sam-Son Farm's Swoop and Strike, a daughter of Smart Strike trained by Malcolm Pierce, broke through at first asking going seven furlongs at Woodbine and is the 3-1 second choice on the morning line. Third choice at 9-2 is stakes-placed Conquest Soprano, who has never finished worse than third in five starts but finally broke through with a neck victory, also at seven furlongs on the Woodbine synthetic surface.
Second-out winner Audacious Bear (12-1) and debut maiden claiming victress Allwehaveisnow (20-1) complete the field.
