Things to Do in Lexington for Keeneland and Breeders’ Cup (también en Español)

October is a special month for many people. Cooler weather. Football. Pumpkin spice lattes. Halloween. But in central Kentucky, October is also known for the fall meeting at Keeneland Race Course, which culminates this year with the 32nd edition of the Breeders’ Cup on Oct. 30 and 31. If you plan to be in Lexington at any point this fall for some great horse racing at Keeneland, below are some other great activities and events taking place in Lexington throughout the month of October: 
1)  Breeders’ Cup Festival week 
Breeders’ Cup Festival week begins in Lexington on Oct. 24 and lasts all the way through the final race of the 2015 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on Oct. 31. There are dozens of events to take in, including food truck festivals and art exhibits. Check out the schedule to find out which events interest you most! 
2)  University of Kentucky football games
In addition to being home to Keeneland, Lexington is also home to the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats have two more home football games at Commonwealth Stadium this month, one on Oct. 15 vs. Auburn and one on Oct. 31 vs. Tennessee. With the Auburn game scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m., you should have just enough time to catch all the great races Keeneland before making it to Commonwealth Stadium for what is sure to be a battle on the football field!

3)  Thoroughbred farm tours
Once you arrive in Lexington, it will not take you long to understand why they call central Kentucky the horse capital of the world.  Lexington is surrounded by hundreds of horse farms, and the beauty of their rolling hills cannot be understated. Take advantage of the opportunity and check out one of these farms for yourself! Many prominent farms, including Claiborne Farm, WinStar Farm and Three Chimneys, have signed on with Horse Country Inc., which organizes visits to various Thoroughbred farms and other organizations for Breeders’ Cup fans, or you can schedule your own tour any time of year with help from the Lexington Visitors Center. You might even get to see where a Kentucky Derby winner was born!
4)  Visit retired racehorses 
While Lexington may be known for its Thoroughbred farms where future champions are born and raised, Lexington is also a great city to visit some of your favorite horses from years past. At Kentucky Horse Park you can check in with Kentucky Derby winners Funny Cide and Go For Gin, while at Old Friends you can see Breeders’ Cup winner Gulch and Derby-Preakness winner Silver Charm and $6.4-million earner Game On Dude, among many others. I’m sure these amazing horses would love for you to pay a visit!

5) Kentucky Theater 
While many Lexington attractions are horse-related, the city does have a charm of its own with plenty of history itself. The Kentucky Theater, which is located in downtown Lexington, first opened in 1922 and is still open today, so you can truly experience history by seeing a movie in this old-fashioned theater. On Oct 27, 28, and 29 the Kentucky Theater will be celebrating the Breeders’ Cup with screenings of horse racing classics such as “Secretariat” and “Unbridled”! 
6) Cemetery walking tour 
It is October, and the frightening thoughts of Halloween are on the minds of many. Every Sunday in the month of October, Lexington Cemetery (located downtown at 833 W. Main Street) is offering a “House Divided” Cemetery Walking Tour, which focuses on Kentucky’s civil war history. This cemetery was built in 1849 and is known in part for the beauty of trees and flowers located on the grounds. The tour takes roughly 90 minutes, and it begins at the Henry Clay monument inside the cemetery. Just make sure you stay with the group to avoid being greeted by any spooky spirits! 
7) Mary Todd Lincoln House 
The Mary Todd Lincoln House is also located in downtown Lexington and is another example of Lexington’s rich history. This house was the childhood home of President Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd, and it now serves as a museum that is open to the public. The Mary Todd Lincoln House also holds the distinction of being the first historic site to be restored in the honor of a First Lady.

8) Hunt-Morgan House 
The Hunt-Morgan house was built in 1814 and is yet another glimpse into Lexington’s past. The house, which is located downtown, is home to numerous 19th-century artifacts, paintings, and pieces of furniture which allows the visitor to imagine what it was like to live in another era. The second floor of house is where you will find the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum, which offers an “extensive collection of Civil War relics and memorabilia.”  
9) Kentucky Basketball's “Big Blue Madness” 
The Kentucky Wildcat basketball program is one of the most beloved teams in all of sports, and their 2015-2016 season will get started with “Big Blue Madness” on Oct. 16. Big Blue Madness takes place at Rupp Arena, where 23,000 fans will watch the Wildcat basketball team participate in their first official practice of the season. The event takes place on a Friday night and is a cause for celebration, sometimes complete with special guest appearances (such as Drake at the 2014 edition of Big Blue Madness), and tickets are very hard to come by.
10) Grand Circuit at Red Mile 
If you find yourself in Lexington during the first half of the Keeneland fall meet, you’re in luck! Harness racing’s Grand Circuit will be live at the Red Mile Oct. 7 thru Oct. 10, where you will be able to see some of the nation’s best in Standardbred racing compete at Lexington’s home for harness racing, the Red Mile.

Octubre es un mes especial para muchas personas. Un clima más frío. Fútbol. Cafés cortados con jarabe de calabaza. Halloween. Pero en el centro de Kentucky, Octubre es también conocido por el mitin de otoño que tiene lugar en Keeneland Race Course, el cual este año culmina con la edición 32da  de las Breeders’ Cup el 30 y 31 de Octubre. Si planeas estar en Lexington en cualquier punto del otoño para algunas de las grandes carreras de caballos en Keeneland, abajo hay algunas otras grandes actividades y eventos que tendrán lugar en Lexington durante el mes de Octubre: 
1)  Semana del Breeders’ Cup Festival 
La semana del Breeders’ Cup Festival comienza en Lexington el 24 de Octubre y continúa hasta la carrera final de la 2015 Breeders’ Cup en Keeneland el 31 de Octubre. 5) Kentucky Theater

El Kentucky Theater, que está localizado en el centro de la ciudad de Lexington, fue inaugurado en 1922 y continúa abierto al día de hoy, así que puedes con certeza experimentar la historia viendo una película en este teatro tradicional. El 27, 28, y 29 de Octubre el Kentucky Theater estará celebrando las Breeders’ Cup con proyecciones de clásicos sobre carrera de caballos tales como “Secretariat” y “Unbridled”! 
6) Caminata guiada por el Cementerio 
Es Octubre, y los pensamientos amenazantes de Halloween están en las mentes de muchos. Cada domingo en el mes de Octubre, el Cementerio de Lexington (ubicado en el centro de la ciudad en 833 W. Main Street) está ofreciendo un tour por el Cementerio llamado “La Casa Dividida”, el cual se enfoca en la historia de la guerra civil en Kentucky. Este Cementerio fue construido en 1849 y es en parte conocido por la belleza de sus árboles y flores ubicados en sus tierras. El tour dura casi 90 minutos, y comienza en el monumento Henry Clay dentro del cementerio. ¡Asegúrate de estar con el grupo para evitar ser saludado por algún espíritu escalofriante! 
7) Mary Todd Lincoln House 
Mary Todd Lincoln House también está localizada en el centro de la ciudad de Lexington y es otro ejemplo de la rica historia de Lexington. Esta casa fue el hogar de la niñez de la esposa del Presidente Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd, y sirve ahora como museo abierto al público. La Mary Todd Lincoln House detenta también la distinción de ser el primer sitio histórico en ser restaurado en honor a una Primera Dama.

8) La casa Hunt-Morgan
La casa Hunt-Morgan fue construida en 1814 y es también otra mirada hacia el pasado de Lexington. La casa, la cual está localizada en el centro de la ciudad, es hogar de numerosos artefactos del siglo19, pinturas, y piezas de mueblería que permiten imaginar al visitante cómo fue vivir en otra época. El segundo piso de la casa es donde encontrarás el Museo de la Guerra Civil Alexander T. Hunt, el cual ofrece una “extensa colección de reliquias de la Guerra Civil y objetos memorables.”  
9) El “Big Blue Madness” del Kentucky Basketball
El equipo de básquet de Kentucky, los Wildcat, es uno de los más queridos equipos de todos los deportes, y su temporada 2015-2016 comenzará con el “Big Blue Madness” este 16 de Octubre. El Big Blue Madness tiene lugar en el Rupp Arena, donde 23,000 aficionados observarán al equipo de básquet de los Wildcat participando en su primera práctica oficial de la temporada. El evento tiene lugar en la noche del viernes y es motivo de celebración, algunas veces completada con la aparición de una estrella invitada (tal como fue la de Drake en la edición 2014 del Big Blue Madness), y los boletos son muy difíciles de conseguir.
10) Grand Circuit en el Red Mile 
¡Si te encuentras en Lexington durante la primera mitad del mitin de otoño de Keeneland, eres un afortunado!
