Six Looks to Support Your Favorite Breeders’ Cup Classic Horses

Description:

If you’re in love with a certain racehorse running in the Breeders’ Cup, showing your support through your clothes is definitely a great idea! While other sports have jerseys for their stars, racing fans get to be a little more creative. Every Thoroughbred owner has a signature pair of “silks” – that’s the shirt and helmet cover that the jockey wears – that are worn in their horses’ every race. If you’re heading to a viewing party to watch your favorite Thoroughbreds compete in the World Championships at Keeneland on Oct. 30-31 on NBC Sports, we have some silks-inspired fashion for you to help you root your favorite home!
1. American Pharoah

Hail the Tail! The short-tailed Triple Crown winner is definitely the fan favorite going into the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and this simple, comfortable outfit is the perfect way to show your love, be stylish and be comfortable all at the same time. Since the Zayat family’s silks are aqua blue and gold, we started with this cheerful pair of teal jeans for $36 from Rip Curl. A pair of high-top Chucks ($39) in bright yellow will keep your feet happy and your look on point, as will the gold-and-white striped top for $9.90 from Choies.  The American Pharoah hat is $25 from the official store, and the leather coat is $25 from CTC.  The earrings are gold and turquoise (perfect!) for $28 by Rebecca Minkoff, and get that Pharoah feeling by stacking on the rings. Clockwise from the left, they are: Nordstrom Rack, $22; Stella & Dot, $29; Louise Et Cie, $48. Finish the whole look off with some Breeders’ Cup purple nail polish for $8 from Crabtree & Evelyn, and you’re ready to show your AP pride for the World Championships!
2. Beholder

I love the Spendthrift Farm silks – Beholder’s owners have a purple-and-orange set, and I think those colors look so wonderful together; plus, they flatter almost every skin tone when deployed correctly! I started with a pair of $31 straight-cut denim trousers from ThatsPoint, and added this must-have horsehead blouse for only $33 from Fengbay. The booties are $30 by ZriEy, the handbag is Rosetti for $39, the earrings are $36 from Alchemy jewelry, and the $23 watch is by Wet Seal. Why not add a Beholder button? I found this one on eBay for the low price of $2.50!
3. Honor Code

Honor Code. That horse makes me the living embodiment of the heart-eyes emoji. He’s so pretty and fast and sweet and … yeah. I like Honor Code, in case you can’t tell. If you do, too, here’s a great way to show your love! The Farish family’s racing silks are a forest green with gold chevrons, so I used those colors to come up with a stylish, comfortable outfit perfect for a Breeders’ Cup viewing party at a friend’s house or a bar. I love these waxed jeans for $31 from 2LUV, and I added a saffron yellow blouse for $38 from H&M. Some stack-heeled ankle booties ($45, Elegant Footwear) and a timeless chic handbag ($50, Avenue) are simple but sophisticated staples to use with this look or many others. Spice things up with this vintage cocktail ring from Etsy for $23 and a $32 River Island chain necklace, then finish off with some plum Etsy nail polish ($8.50) and $6 NYX lipstick.
4. Frosted

The 1970s are back this fall, and I for one am delighted to welcome the return of flares and groovy chic. Frosted, who comes into the Breeders’ Cup off of a victory in the Pennsylvania Derby, is owned by Godolphin Racing (who are the rulers of Dubai – how cool is that?) and their silks are a royal blue and white. That’s why I used a classic flare jean ($40, River Island) and added this flowy top for $34 on Etsy. I love these $25 Chase & Chloe stacked heel clogs: they’re an update on an old favorite. The faux-suede Neiman Marcus saddle bag ($60) is on-trend for autumn 2015, and a little bit of gold from the cuff ($9.90, Wet Seal) and hoop earrings ($10, River Island) will add some necessary sparkle. If the late-October weather is a little chilly, a shearling biker jacket ($45, Choies) will keep you cozy as you cheer home Frosted.
5. Keen Ice

Keen Ice burst into the national spotlight with his surprise upset of American Pharoah in this year’s Travers Stakes. The colt is owned by Donegal Racing Stables, whose silks are an eye-catching Kelly green and yellow checkerboard. If you’re rooting for Keen Ice, you can show your pride with a bright MICHAEL for Michael Kors top for $70 and a cheerful yellow saddle bag for $38 from Yes Style. A dark-rinse pair of jeans ($12, 2LUV) and some on-trend over-the-knee boots ($45, Sole Society) will keep you comfortable and stylish; and I added layered necklaces for $18 from the Dandy Lion Boutique, a cuff bracelet for $20 from Bling Jewelry, and lucky horseshoe earrings for $45 via Macy’s.
6. Liam’s Map

Liam’s Map sprinted into hearts with his speedy showings in the Whitney Handicap and the Woodward Stakes. If he’s your horse for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, his owner, Teresa Viola Racing Stables, has some great silks to riff off of! They’re blue with yellow stars, and between that and the name Liam’s Map, you can have some fun getting your outfit together. I used this great star-print sweater from Yes Style for $49 layered over a simple pair of $40 jeans from Wet Seal. I am definitely going to order these gold brogues for just $45 from Ali Express – menswear-inspired shoes are all the rage these days, and I am like a magpie in that I cannot resist anything shiny. The handbag is a simple but stylish number for $45 from New Look; the jewelry is where you can really get playful! How about this compass necklace ($38, Cabernet) and the moon and stars bangles from Baublebar for $38? Finish off with a few coats of gold $8 Crabtree and Evelyn nail polish, and your Team Liam’s Map spirit will be glowing!
