Square Dancer Heads BC Premier's

Hastings Racing Club's Square Dancer, unbeaten in three starts at Hastings Park this summer, has the rail and the 122-pound high weight for Monday's BC Premier's Handicap (Can-III). The $100,000 race is at 1 3/8 miles and has drawn a field of eight.



A two-length winner of an allowance/optional claiming race in mid-July, the Steve Henson-trained Square Dancer has won a pair of nose decisions in both the Redekop Classic Handicap and S. W. Randall Plate Handicap. The off-the-pace type figures to relish some additional ground in the Premier's.



A 5-year-old gelding by Circular Quay—Dance Special, by Theatrical, Square Dancer was bred in Florida by Brent and Crystal Fernung and has a 9-5-4 career mark from 26 starts. He's won five of eight starts this year.



The Randall offered a blanket finish and both the runner-up, Dontmesswithkitten, and third-place finisher, Shooting Jacket, take another try here. Shooting Jacket, a 5-year-old gelding by Hard Spun  , was beaten just a neck Sept. 13 and gets a favorable break in the weights this time 'round. He'll tote a scant 114, dropping five pounds off the Randall defeat.



Dontmesswithkitten, by Kitten's Joy   is winless in seven attempts at Hastings but does have a pair of stakes placings. His lifetime slate is 2-15-2 from 34 career starts.



The pace figures to go to Killin Me Smalls, who ships in from Northlands Park. The frontrunner was fourth in last year's Randall and has won four of six starts this year while on the lead or attending the pace early. He'll be asked to carry 121 pounds.
