Dutchess Views Farm's homebred Dr. Shane upset 1-4 favorite Championofthenile by two lengths in the $206,963 New York Breeders' Futurity Oct. 17 at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, collecting his first stakes win.

The 2-year-old Freud   runner covered six furlongs in 1:12.85 under jockey Jaime Rodriguez, winning the second race of his six-start career after four tries, the four previous outings in stakes company.

Rodriguez angled Dr. Shane out to striking position headed down the backstretch, as Saratoga Giro showed the way through a :21.93 quarter and a :45.59 half with Championofthenile in close pursuit. Dr. Shane looped four wide to striking position through the turn, and bid from that path through the stretch to run down the favorite and win by two lengths.

Off at odds of 13-1, Dr. Shane paid $29.80, $6.60, and $2.90. Championofthenile returned $2.10 and $2.10, while Mind Your Biscuits brought $2.10. Saratoga Giro and Love That Jazz completed the order of finish. Sky Devil broke down at the eighth pole and was vanned off.

Out of the Orientate mare French Link, Dr. Shane has a 2-1-2 record and earnings of $220,328. After breaking his maiden at first asking May 29 at Belmont Park, the bay runner was sent to the Tremont Stakes (seventh), Rockville Centre Stakes (third), Funny Cide Stakes (third) and Aspirant Stakes (second) before he picked up his biggest career tally to date for trainer Nicholas Esler.
