Lucky Lindy rolls to victory in the Hawthorne Derby.

Augustin Stables' homebred Lucky Lindy traveled south from Woodbine on an Illinois raiding trip for trainer Mark Frostad and easily claimed his second graded score, sailing home in the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby (gr. IIIT) by 2 1/4 lengths.

Coming off a 3 3/4 length victory in the Sept. 20 Ontario Derby (Can-III) on Woodbine's all-weather track, the Ontario-bred Harlan's Holiday colt took down 11 others in Hawthorne Racecourse's 1 1/8-mile turf test while favored at odds of 5-2. It was his first start outside Canada.

Jockey Robby Albarado had Lucky Lindy well back seventh along the rail as longshots Mission Driven and Flashy Jewel headed out to the early lead through opening fractions of :22.97 and :46.46. Lucky Lindy was sixth as three-quarters went in 1:10.90, and circled five wide on the turn to make his closing run. The bay colt took over while running a 1:35.87 mile and drew off en route to a final time of 1:48.26 on turf rated firm.

Saham also closed to get second, while Nun the Less rallied a head behind him for third. Mission Driven, Wireless Future, Belomor, Net Gain, Granny's Kitten, Syntax, Chip Leader, and Flashy Jewel completed the order of finish.

An inquiry was posted after Nucifera clipped heels going around the far turn, but no change was made. Nucifera ran off and was captured by the outriders, while jockey Alex Cintron was not seriously injured and did not go to the hospital.

Lucky Lindy paid $7.20, $4.20, and $3.60 while Saham brought $4.40 and $3.20. Nun the Less paid $8.20.

Out of the Rahy mare Celebrate, Lucky Lindy improved his record to 3-2-1 from seven starts and earnings of $276,571.
